The 44th season of Lincoln Center's Great Performers opens with the return of conductor Bernard Haitink and the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) with three concerts of Schubert and Mahler in Avery Fisher Hall. The season opens on October 21 with Schubert's Symphony No. 5 and Mahler's Symphony No. 4, the latter with soprano Miah Persson as soloist. On October 23, Maestro Haitink leads a program of Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, with soloists mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn in her Lincoln Center debut and tenor Robert Gambill. The final performance on October 25 will be of Mahler's Symphony No. 9, which they performed earlier this month in London in a stunning BBC Proms concert. Bernard Haitink and the LSO last appeared together in New York when they opened 2006-7 Great Performers season with an acclaimed traversal of the complete Beethoven symphonies.
Highlighting the fall season of Great Performers is a trio of events in New Visions, which explores music's unique relationship to visual art and language. The series begins with the world premiere production of the Lincoln Center commission Pictures Reframed, in which collaborators pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and video artist Robin Rhode re-imagine Musorgsky's monumental suite Pictures at an Exhibition (Alice Tully Hall, November 13, 14). In One Evening, director Katie Mitchell (whose staging of Virginia Woolf's Waves was a hit during last season's New Visions) examines how profoundly Schubert's music affected Samuel Beckett's writing, with tenor Mark Padmore singing the composer's Winterreise in English, and an actor reciting the playwright's poetry and prose (Gerald W. Lynch Theater, December 9-11). And Heiner Goebbels' Stifters Dinge is a captivating musical installation inspired by the nature writing of the 19th century Austrian author Adalbert Stifter (Park Avenue Armory, December 16-20).
Renowned artists are also featured in Great Performers concerts at Alice Tully Hall. Cellist Johannes Moser is the featured soloist with Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, performing Schumann's Cello Concerto under conductor Ivor Bolton (November 1); adventurous pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard performs Mozart, Benjamin, Stockhausen, and Beethoven in recital (November 15); and mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager sings Brahms, Wolf, Hahn, and Mahler, with pianist Warren Jones (November 29).Tickets for the Great Performers 2009-2010 season are available at the Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Hall box offices; online at LincolnCenter.org; by phone via CenterCharge, 212-721-6500; and by mail to: Great Performers, Alice Tully Hall Box Office, 1941 Broadway, New York, NY 10023-6588.
