GUSTAVIA Will Come to The Royal Swedish Opera in June
Performances will begin on June 11.
The Royal Swedish Opera will revive the ballet “Gustavia” beginning June 11, 2026, at the historic Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm.
The production, which first premiered to strong reviews in 2024, will return as part of the company’s 2026 season and tells the story of Gustav Badin Couschi, the adopted brother of King Gustav III, through a mix of dance, orchestral music and dramatic storytelling.
Written and directed by filmmaker Amir Chamdin, the ballet features choreography by Pär Isberg and performances by the Royal Swedish Ballet accompanied by the Royal Swedish Orchestra under the baton of conductor Simon Crawford-Phillips. The score incorporates music by composers including Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert, alongside music by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth.
"Gustavia” runs approximately two hours and 15 minutes with one intermission. The ballet explores themes of power, morality, rebellion and love, blending classical ballet traditions with contemporary theatrical aesthetics.
