Composer Peter-Anthony Togni has won the 2014 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award, as announced in Halifax last Thursday. www.nsmasterworks.ca

The jury commented that the combination of new and ancient musics integrates classical ensemble singing into a new context. Artistically mature and highly original as a composition, Responsio's impact will spread internationally, independently of its performance in Nova Scotia. In the choral work Responsio, Togni reflects, comments, refutes, challenges and embellishes the bare medieval voice of Guillaume de Machaut and his medieval masterpiece the Messe de Nostre Dame.

A recording of the work will soon be released. A sample of the work can be heard here: jeffreilly.ca/projects-2/responsio/

VOICEBOX: Opera in Concert patrons will hear the music of Togni in May of 2015, when a workshop of his opera Isis and Osiris, Ancient Gods of Egypt, composed to a libretto by Toronto poet Sharon Singer, will be presented at the Edward Jackman Centre in Toronto. As with Responsio, he has been inspired by another ancient work and is currently composing the score for this new Canadian opera. The work has been in development with Voicebox: Opera in Concert for some time and a world premiere at the St. Lawrence Centre is planned for 2016.

Winner of the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal, Peter-Anthony Togni is also known as a broadcaster and host for his many CBC Radio Programs over the past twenty years, such as That Time of the Night, the award winning Stereo Morning, Weekender and Choral Concert. Togni has performed his works everywhere from Toronto's Roy Thompson Hall, the Moscow Conservatory, the Oriental Arts Centre in Shanghai, to the Vatican in Rome for His Holiness Pope John Paul II. His music is broadcast regularly in Canada on CBC, as well as internationally, including BBC, Classic FM, Deutsche Welle and Radio France. Togni's full bio is available here: www.petertogni.com
