Conversant on the tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, Boney James virtually created the urban jazz genre, melding contemporary jazz with hip-hop sensibilities. A four-time Grammy nominee and an NAACP Image Award nominee, James is now touring in support of his 2015 release, futuresoul, fusing his love for vintage soul music with his mastery of modern production.

CAPA presents Boney James at the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts (100 W. Dublin-Granville Rd., New Albany) on Sunday, October 18, at 8 pm. Tickets are $31-$56 at the CAPA Ticket Center (39 E. State St.), all Ticketmaster outlets, and www.ticketmaster.com. To purchase tickets by phone, please call (614) 469-0939 or (800) 745-3000.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, and raised in New Rochelle, New York, James became seriously interested in music in the mid '70s, a very vibrant and freewheeling period for popular music. Following early pro gigs (including sideman stints with Morris Day, the Isley Brothers, Randy Crawford, and Teena Marie), James released his debut album as a leader, Trust (1992).

Over the next 23 years, James racked up sales of more than three million records, four RIAA Gold albums, four Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award, nominations for two NAACP Image Awards, and 10 albums atop Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. In 2009, Billboard magazine named him the #3 Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade (behind only Kenny G and Norah Jones).
