The range of musical interests and favoured repertoire of the individual members is exceptionally diverse. This diversity is an asset. Big Apple Baroque doesn't just perform the music, it embodies the style: melding disparate elements into a coherent whole was a fundamental cultural project of the Baroque.
Since its establishment in 2002, it has specialised in presenting generally less familiar but exceptional quality works of the Baroque and Early Classical repertoire -- works that deserve to be enjoyed by all, not just by select period instrument ensembles. It usually uses modern instruments for larger scale works but also mounts period instrument performances on occasion, thereby seeking to bridge the divide between modern classical and Early Music ensembles. The balance of instrumental forces follows that of London concert bands in the opening decades of the eighteenth-century.The majority of Big Apple Baroque's performances, whether for chamber forces or the full 40 strong band and choir, have featured the works of Bach, Handel, Purcell and Thomas Linley Jr. It has a track record of more than 20 successful performances (2001-2004 and 2009-2010) and has produced fully staged productions of Handel's Acis and Galatea, Dibdin's The Ephesian Matron and choreographed versions of Handel cantatas Delirio Amoroso and The Choice of Hercules. All of its performances from 2002-2010 were for charitable causes, mainly to benefit New York's homeless.
