Amerigo Trio to Play Rubin Museum of Art, 4/29

On Sunday, April 29 at 4pm, the Amerigo Trio will perform at the Rubin Museum of Art (150 W. 17th St., NYC) as part of the Museum's Resonating Light concerts, a Sunday classical music series hosted by WQXR's Elliott Forrest. The Amerigo Trio was founded in 2009 by violinist and New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow, his wife violist Karen Dreyfus, and cellist Inbal Segev. The trio's program, entitled Spirituality and Circumstance, is inspired by the Museum's exhibition Illuminated: The Art of Sacred Books as well as its Permanent Collection and will include J. S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (arr. for string trio by D. Sitkovetsky), Gideon Klein's String Trio, Maurice Ravel's Kaddish for solo cello, George Frederic Handel's Passacaglia (arr. for violin and viola by J. Halvorsen), and Beethoven's String Trio, Op. 9 No. 3 in C minor.

Dicterow, Dreyfus and Segev first performed together in 2007 at the Bowdoin International Chamber Music Festival in Maine when one of the cellists in a Brahms sextet had to cancel due to injury. Dicterow and Dreyfus recommended their New York neighbor, Segev, as the replacement. The chemistry of their first performance together was undeniable, and in 2009 they formed the Amerigo Trio. In the short time since then, they have already been invited to play at some of the most prestigious concert series in the country, including Lorin Maazel's Castleton Festival in Virginia, The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, the Concord Chamber Music Society in Massachusetts, Symphony Space in New York, and Dumbarton Concerts and the Phillips Collection Concert Series, both in Washington, DC.

Of the trio's 2011 performance at Tannery Pond Concerts, The Berkshire Arts Almanac reported, "Segev's playing is fluid and bold, Dreyfus is elegant and expressive, and Dicterow is fantastic." The Berkshire Eagle raved, "In the tannery's close acoustics, the Amerigo Trio came across as a powerhouse, yet flexible in its approach."

The Amerigo Trio will release its debut recording of serenades by Dohnányi in 2012 on the Navona Records label. The Amerigo Trio is named after Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer. The trio is committed to the exploration of the riches of the string trio repertoire, both new and old.
