Stephen Costello Joins The Metropolitan Opera's LA TRAVIATA on December 26

American tenor Stephen Costello will sing the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera on Wednesday, December 26, replacing Juan Diego Flórez, who is ill.

Costello has previously sung the role of Alfredo at the Met, the Bavarian State Opera, the Boshoi Theatre, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He was last seen at the Met singing the role of Roméo in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette in 2017, a role he had previously sung at Santa Fe Opera and San Diego Opera. He made his Met debut in 2007 as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor, with other roles for the company including Camille de Rosillon in Lehár's The Merry Widow, Lord Percy in Donizetti's Anna Bolena, and the Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto. He has appeared at many of the world's leading opera houses and music festivals, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.

The cast for La Traviata includes Diana Damrau as Violetta and Quinn Kelsey as Giorgio Germont. The Met's Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, conducts.

La Traviata has another performance at the Met on December 29, and returns to the repertory with Costello as Alfredo for a further seven performances from April 4, 2019.
