Quintet Attacca to Play OU's Varner Recital Hall, 3/15

The Chamber Music Society of Detroit will cap its 2014-2015 Oakland University series on Sunday, March 15 at 3 PM with Quintet Attacca, a Chicago-based wind quintet, joined by pianist Panayis Lyras. The all-French program features quintets for winds, and sextets for piano and winds, by Ibert, Franciax, Ravel and Poulenc. The concert takes place at Oakland University's Varner Recital Hall located at 2200 N. Squirrel Road in Rochester. General admission tickets priced at $30 for adults and $15 for students are available by phone at 248-855-6070 or online at www.ChamberMusicDetroit.org. Tickets are also available at the Varner Recital Hall box office one hour prior to concert.

Founded in 1999, Quintet Attacca is one of Chicago's most dynamic chamber music ensembles. Grand Prize Winner and Wind Division Gold Medal Winner of the 2002 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, one of only two wind quintets in the 40-year history of the Fischoff Competition to have received the Grand Prize. Dedicated to bringing the unique sound of the wind quintet to all types of audiences, Quintet Attacca has played in venues across the Midwest, and has also appeared at the Emilia Romagne Festival in Italy and at the Schneider Concert Series in New York. The Quintet's innovative approach to programming makes for concerts that are both accessible and cutting-edge, and it is passionate about bringing music education to diverse audiences with engaging outreach programs.

Winner of the Silver Medal in the 1981 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Panayis Lyras has been seen and heard by millions of television viewers on PBS and the Arts and Entertainment Network. He is also the first prize winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Utah, the University of Maryland International Piano Competition, the Three Rivers Piano Competition in Pittsburgh, and is a silver medalist in the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Israel. Panayis Lyras has performed solo recitals in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and in other major cities across North America, and has toured in Europe, Asia, Mexico and South America. Panayis Lyras is professor of piano and artist in residence at the Michigan State University College of Music. A native of Greece, Mr. Lyras attended the Athens Conservatory at age six and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Juilliard School.
