Pink Martini to Join Utah Symphony for Holiday Weekend, 12/12-13

Highly-anticipated special guest ensemble Pink Martini joins Principal Pops Conductor Jerry Steichen and the Utah Symphony in Abravanel Hall on December 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. for a holiday show that brings music, magic and excitement from around the world right to our doorstep. Also this weekend is the Utah Symphony's annual holiday concert "Here Comes Santa Claus!" at Abravanel Hall on December 13 at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Led by Santa's favorite conductor Vladimir Kulenovic, the two kid-friendly, 45-minute long family concerts are full of holiday favorites including "Joy to the World," "O Christmas Tree" and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." Santa Claus will be in the lobby before each concert, so don't forget your wish list! Pink Martini is well-known for a culturally eclectic repertoire. The ensemble, known as Portland's "Little Orchestra," draws inspiration from music from the world over, fusing the genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop. Their multilingual vocalists sing in different languages including, but not limited to, English, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, and French. It is easy to relate to their music, energy, and appeal. "The New York Times" said, "The sparkle of fantasy, even more than musicianship or internationalism, just might be the secret to Pink Martini's success."

The members of Pink Martini are Phil Baker (upright bass), Gavin Bondy (trumpet), Pansy Chang (Cello), Nicholas Crosa (violin), Brian Lavern Davis (congas, drums and percussion), Dan Faehnle (guitar), China Forbes (vocals), Storm Large (vocals), Thomas M. Lauderdale (piano), Timothy Nishimoto (vocals and percussion), Robert Taylor (trombone), and Anthony Jones (drums and percussion).

RELATED EVENTS

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera's Education Department offers free holiday lobby activities for families in the lobby prior to each of the "Here Comes Santa Claus!" concerts. The Madeleine Choir School Orchestra will perform from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and Stirling Strings will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Santa Claus will be available to talk to children and to take pictures with families in front of the Chihuly from 9:45 to 10:50 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Kids of all ages are invited to make their own Utah Symphony holiday ornament with Youth Guild and Education staff volunteers. Lobby opens at 9:30 a.m.
