Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad will be a guest speaker for the Harold Clurman Lecture Series at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting on Monday, June 9, 2008. Rashad most recently received rave reviews for her role as Big Mama in the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The event will feature a short lecture followed by a question and answer session. The Lecture Series is part of the Harold Clurman Arts Series, which also includes poetry readings, concerts, movement and acting labs.

The lecture will begin at 7:00 pm. The Stella Adler Studio is located at 31 West 27th Street, New York, NY. This event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required; please call (212) 689-0087.

"It is an honor to welcome Phylicia to the Studio. We are so pleased to have her expose our students to her career and encourage them to create their own work," said Tom Oppenheim, Artistic Director of The Stella Adler Studio "Phylicia's many performances on the stage, on television and in film represent a truly remarkable artistic career."

Endeared by television audiences for her role as Clair Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," Rashad won the 2004 Tony Award for best actress in a play and the 2004 Drama Desk Award for best actress, both for her portrayal of Lena in A Raisin in the Sun. Rashad recently made her directorial debut at the helm of The Seattle Repertory Theater's production of August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean. Rashad is a native of Houston, TX who graduated magna cum laude with a B.F.A. in theater from Howard University.

The Harold Clurman Lecture Series, formed in 1993 to keep students in touch with larger theatrical traditions, brings professional writers, directors, musicians, dancers and actors to the Stella Adler Studio. After lecturing, guests are interviewed by students, creating an open forum about what it means to be an artist today. The Lecture Series is one of many programs named to honor the spirit of Harold Clurman. Previous speakers have included: Whoopi Goldberg, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ron Howard, Sidney Poitier and John Travolta.

Established in 1949 by Stella Adler, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting was founded upon Adler's belief in the supreme seriousness of her art, and has, for the last five decades, enriched every part of the American theater and film arts. Adler's philosophies kept many well-known members of the theater coming back for her intelligent and passionate advice and the school has since trained many of the brilliant actors of our time, including Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Elaine Stritch, Benicio del Toro, Mark Ruffalo and Salma Hayek. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting is a nonprofit organization, which currently trains over 500 actors each year and also presents world class lectures, poetry readings, jazz, classical music, theater and dance theater events.
