New World Symphony Welcomes Carnegie Hall's NYO2 To Miami For First Residency

The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), is excited to welcome Carnegie Hall's NYO2 for their first-ever residency in Miami, July 16-21, 2018. NYO2 is an intensive summer orchestral training program that features some of the finest young instrumentalists from across the U.S. (ages 14-17), including several South Florida musicians this summer. The NWS and Carnegie Hall, two organizations with deep commitments to education and artist training, have partnered for the first year to provide unique opportunities for NYO2. The NYO2 program is an extension of Carnegie Hall's acclaimed NYO-USA (the National Youth Orchestra of the USA), for ages 16-19, and was created with a particular focus on attracting students from communities underserved by, and underrepresented in, the classical orchestral field.

After an intensive two-week training period at Purchase College, State University of New York, where NYO2 will work with a world-class faculty, including NWS Fellows and alumni as well as other professional musicians from top U.S. orchestras, the members of NYO2 will come to Miami for six days of musical activity. As part of their training at the New World Center, they will work closely with selected NWS Fellows and alumni, rehearse and perform. As the culminating event of their Miami residency, NYO2 will make their New World Center debut on Saturday, July 21 at 8:30 p.m., under the baton of Carlos Miguel Prieto, with violinist Gil Shaham as soloist. The program will include Revueltas's Suite from Redes, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, and Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 featuring Gil Shaham. New World Symphony will also present the performance as a WALLCAST concert, presented by Citi, where the symphony projects the interior concert on the large, 7,000-square-foot eastern façade of the building facing SoundScape Park. Each WALLCAST is free to the public and does not require a ticket.

During their time in Miami, the NYO2 members will also have the opportunity to engage with local musicians, sharing their skills and experience with young players participating in the Greater Miami Youth Symphony's Summer Camp at Ponce de Leon Middle School in Coral Gables.

Following their Miami residency, the NYO2 musicians return to New York for a final performance at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. About NYO2
Created by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute in summer 2016, NYO2 brings together outstanding young American instrumentalists ages 14-17 for a summer orchestral training program with a particular focus on attracting talented students from groups underserved by and underrepresented in the classical orchestral field. Running in conjunction with NYO-USA's annual summer residency at Purchase College, SUNY, NYO2 offers an opportunity for participants to play alongside exceptionally talented peers and learn from a world-class faculty. The inaugural season of NYO2 culminated in a side-by-side concert with The Philadelphia Orchestra at Verizon Hall led by conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, as well as a pop-up performance at the 23rd Street Armory alongside NYO-USA, members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and local instrumentalists from the Philadelphia area. In summer 2017, the members of NYO2 made their Carnegie Hall debut with Guerrero, members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Grammy Award-winning bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding. This year, NYO2 partners with the New World Symphony for the first time for a six-day residency in Miami Beach, with performances at the New World Center and Carnegie Hall led by conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto and featuring acclaimed violinist Gil Shaham.
