Branford Marsalis & Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia Perform at Harris Center This Weekend

In Marsalis Well-Tempered, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, most commonly known for his work in jazz, tackles baroque oboe concertos on the soprano saxophone backed by a world-class chamber orchestra in two exciting programs, each on a different day, at Harris Center for the Arts. This is a terrific opportunity for jazz lovers following this artist to discover the magic of classical music, and classical music lovers to discover what a top-flight jazz artist can do when he sets his sights on a new genre of music.

Program I (October 11) features J. S. Bach - Air on a G String, from Suite #3 in D Major, BWV 1068; Albinoni - Concerto À Cinque for Oboe, Strings and Continuo in C Major, Op. 9, No. 5; Purcell - Incidental Music for Strings (Suite from Abdelazer or The Moor's Revenge); Dornel - Oboe Sonata in G Major; Locatelli - Concerto Grosso in C minor, Op. 1 No. 6; Handel - "Al Lampo Dell" armi (aria from Guilio Cesare); Handel - "Cara Speme, Questo Core Tu Cominci" (aria from Guilio Cesare), and J. S. Bach - Concerto for Oboe D'Amour, Strings and Continuo in A. (Program subject to change)

Program II (October 12) features Albinoni - Adagio in G Minor; J.S. Bach - Concerto for Oboe, Strings, and Continuo in F, BWV 1053; Telemann - Don Quichotte; François Couperin - Les Concerts Royaux, Premier Concert; Corelli - Concerto Grosso in G minor, Op. 6, No. 8;, Dornel - Oboe Sonata in G Major; and J.S. Bach - Concerto for Oboe D'Amour, Strings and Continuo in A. (Program subject to change)

Marsalis Well-Tempered, An Evening with Branford Marsalis featuring The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia will perform Program I on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 8 pm, and Program II on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 2 pm. Tickets for each program are $35-$55; Premium $55; $12 Students with ID. Tickets are available online at www.harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

NEA Jazz Master, Grammy Award winning saxophonist and Tony Award nominee Branford Marsalis is one of the most revered instrumentalists of his time. Leader of one of the finest jazz Quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with such acclaimed orchestras as the Chicago, Detroit, Düsseldorf, and North Carolina Symphonies and the Boston Pops, with a growing repertoire that includes compositions by Copland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem and Vaughn Williams.

Making his first appearance with the New York Philharmonic in the summer of 2010, Marsalis was again invited to join them as soloist in their 2010-2011 concert series where he unequivocally demonstrated his versatility and prowess, bringing "a gracious poise and supple tone...and an insouciant swagger" (New York Times) to the repertoire. Whether on the stage, in the recording studio, in the classroom or in the community, Branford Marsalis embodies a commitment to musical excellence and a determination to keep music at the forefront.

The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia is a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, and a professional ensemble led by Music Director Dirk Brossé. The Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1964, has a well-established reputation for distinguished performances of repertoire from the Baroque period through the twenty-first century.

The Chamber Orchestra has performed with such internationally acclaimed guest artists as Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mstislav Rostropovich, Issac Stern, Rudolph Serkin, The Eroica Trio, Jean-Pierre Rampal, The Romeros Guitar Quartet, Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters, Ben Folds, Elvis Costello, Sylvia McNair, Steven Isserlis, Joseph Silverstein, Ransom Wilson, Gerard Schwarz, Jahja Ling and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, among others. The ensemble travels regularly, having toured the United States, Europe, and Israel.
