Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Names Winners of 2018 Young Artist Concerto Competition

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra has announced the 1st Place Winner of the BSO's 2018 Young Artist Concerto Competition is Phoebe Rawn for her performance of Flute Fantaisie by Hüe.

A junior at Garfield High School in Seattle, Phoebe Rawn began studying flute with Alicia Suarez, and currently studies with Zart Dombourian-Eby of the Seattle Symphony. She is a member of the Garfield Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Youth Symphony, and also studies music academics at the Seattle Conservatory of Music. She has played on Classical KING FM as a finalist in the the KING FM Young Artist Awards and as a winner of the Seattle Flute Society's Horsfall Competition. In addition, Phoebe has performed flute concertos with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Seattle. In January 2018, she will perform as a soloist with the Seattle Symphony, having been selected through their Young Artists Auditions. This past summer, Phoebe attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute as a member of their Young Artists Orchestra.

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Names Winners of 2018 Young Artist Concerto Competition Seattle native Carson Ling-Efird (cello) was awarded 2nd Place for her performance of Saint-Säens' Cello Concerto. A 12-year-old who began studying cello at age four, Carson currently studies with Dr. Kevin Krentz and studio collaborative pianist Dr. Li-Tan Hsu. Just after beginning her cello studies, Carson had the opportunity to meet and play for Yo-Yo Ma, an experience that helped to inspire her goal of becoming a professional cellist. Carson will be making her solo debut with the Seattle Symphony after being selected as a 2017-2018 Seattle Symphony Young Artist. In addition, she has been a medalist and finalist in numerous competitions, including the Seattle Young Artist Music Festival, the Simon-Fiset Strings Competition and the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside. She began playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra's programs three years ago and is currently principal cellist for SYSO's Junior Symphony Orchestra.

Also this year, the judges issued two Honorable Mentions - to Owen Espinosa (piano) for his performance of Ravel's Concerto in G and Adlai Erickson (cello) for his performance of Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody.

BSO's outgoing Music Director Wesley Schulz congratulates all participants in the BSO's 2018 Young Artist Concerto Competition, saying, "It was a true pleasure to hear so many talented and capable young musicians. Everyone displayed solid musicianship, careful preparation, and great confidence. There are few people in the world that can study an instrument, memorize a concerto, and perform at such a high level"

The 1st Place Winner Phoebe Rawn is unavailable to perform this season but we are pleased to present the 2nd Place Winner Carson Ling-Efird in a performance of Sant-Saens Cello Concerto in A, Movements II and III with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra on April 14 & 15. BSO Music Director Finalist Tigran Arakelyan will lead the orchestra in our family-friendly spring concert "Superheroes and Villains!" with favorite music from the original Batman, Superman, and even John Williams' original scoring for Star Wars: The Force Awakens! The Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra will also be featured in a side-by-side performance.

Don't miss the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's February concert - Franck Symphony in D minor - on February 17 & 18 with Guest Conductor Mario Alejandro Torres and featured artist David Krosschell, who will be performing Ewazen's Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra.
