Author A.L. Smith to Launch Second Novel, 'Behind Closed Doors 2: Dana's Story (Second Edition)'
by BWW News Desk - January 04, 2016
East St Louis is a city on the verge of economic collapse. Often considered the heart of America's bottom because of its location downstream from the Mississippi River, it is also one of the most impoverished small cities in the country. In light of the poor infrastructure, rampant crime, and poverty, East St Louis is the epitome of a third world country. 'Behind Closed Doors 2' is the riveting tale of one little girl's struggle to overcome circumstances beyond her control. Born and raised on the ruthless streets of East St Louis, Dana Toussaint was accustomed to a life of privilege; thanks to her father, a Haitian-born immigrant and notorious drug lord. Dana's mother; a materialistic southern belle from South Louisiana, is consumed by the good life, as memories of her upbringing in an East New Orleans housing project become a distant memory. In spite of the similarities between the Haitian and Louisiana Creole cultures, the marriage unravels and the unthinkable occurs when Dana's father abruptly abandons the family. At the age of 12, Dana becomes the ultimate sacrifice and her mother brokers the deal.

Book Synopsis Len, a NASA scientist met Trish at a party and fell in love with her. Unlike Len's honorable and efficient wife Magda, Trish was articulate and feisty. Len and Trish embark on a torrid love affair that takes them to the stratosphere, with adventures in the U.S.A. and Europe punctuated by epochal events such as '9/11' and Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster, which they observed together from vantage perspectives provided by his work schedule. Len kept up hopes and plans to get his family well situated, as dictated by his traditional African background, before he would follow his heart and cleave to Trish. But by the time he finally left his 44-year-old marriage, Trish had quietly defected to someone else. Len pulled all stops to woo her back, but she spurned all his efforts. When he persisted, she turned truculent adversary and sued him for stalking. A perplexed Len now examined Trish's behavior and was horrified to find that the real Trish Adoja was a consummate con artist: her years of pretended affection was a camouflage for serial predation on a specific, predictable type of man. Memoir TAKING NANY HOME Wins New Apple eBook Award for Excellence in Independent Publishing
by BWW News Desk - January 04, 2016
'Taking Nana Home' by Carol Elizabeth Wawrychuk receives Medalist Honors in the 'Autobiography - Biography - Memoir' category of the 2015 New Apple Summer eBook Awards for Excellence in Independent Publishing. Book Synopsis In 2004, thirty-five years after she died while a patient in the mental hospital at Las Vegas, New Mexico, Nana came to her granddaughter in a vision. 'Take me home, Carol. Take me home.' Little did Carol know, Nana was apparently speaking for over 2,000 souls in need of a final resting place. Ducking under barbed wire fencing to enter the cemetery grounds, Carol combed through sagebrush and knee high weeds in search of clues to Nana's burial place. Instead of serene surroundings with beautiful headstones, she found cement slabs with dates and names crudely etched by hand, mangled metal markers stamped with patient numbers, and human remains that had eroded to the surface. Carol was standing in a throwaway cemetery. Thus began the two-year journey to find Nana. From confronting the bureaucracy of a state government, to interviews with news media, to doggedly pursuing the hospital administration, Carol's search pushed her out of the safety net of her comfortable life as a wife, mother and teacher. The journey also afforded Carol the opportunity to expose some skeletons in the closet, as she came to terms with early childhood memories and how their true meaning was revealed. About the Author Carol Wawrychuk, a graduate of New Mexico State University, taught elementary school for over thirty years. Now retired, she is a contributing writer to the La Canada Flintridge Neighbors Magazine, published by Best Version Media. In addition to Taking Nana Home, she has authored Miracles Happened There and Tsunami in the Desert, as well as co-authored a series of curriculum books for early childhood education published by Monday Morning Books. Carol also enjoys writing poetry and sharing stories of her faith journey. With a passion for Spiritual Formation, Carol facilitates small group spiritual direction, leads silent retreats, and individual spiritual mentoring. She is involved as a group leader in the Vocation & Formation Program at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA. Carol and her husband, Bill, live in La Canada, CA. Tayo Oredein Hosts Book Giveaway for HIS PHD IS IN HYPOCRISY... AND OTHER POEMS ABOUT MY CRAPPY EX-BOYFRIEND
by BWW News Desk - January 04, 2016
Tayo Oredein, an author, model and actress from Queens, NY is giving away free electronic copies of her book 'His PhD is in Hypocrisy...And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend.' The book is a collection of poems recounting the author's interreligious and interracial relationship with her then-boyfriend, a Muslim man with family ties to Palestine. Oredein says her relationship with her ex-boyfriend is largely responsible for steering her away from Islamophobia after the 9/11 attacks. She is hosting the give-away in the hopes that her story can help raise awareness about Islam, and reduce the tensions that have risen given recent events. 'Before my ex, the only exposure that I had to Muslims was what I saw on TV. It was nothing but negative stereotypes,' Oredein says. 'But then we started dating, and I was around him, and his family and friends all the time. I learned a lot about Islam- what it is, and what it isn't- and how the literal root of the word means 'peace'. Even though he and I obviously didn't end on great terms, if it weren't for him, I would have jumped on the anti-Muslim bandwagon out of ignorance along with everyone else.' Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from entering the United States and other fear mongering tactics has only increased distrust and strained relationships with respect to the Islamic community. Oredein, who identifies as an African-American, and as Christian, is frustrated by the way Muslims are being portrayed and treated in the media. She decided to give away free copies of her book in hopes of changing the messaging surrounding Muslims. 'When I hear anti-Muslim rhetoric leads an eight-year old child to think she is going to be ripped from her home, it breaks my heart. I'm just hoping that my story can open some eyes, minds and hearts with respect to our Muslim brothers and sisters- because that's exactly who they are - They are our brothers and sisters.' So far 'His PhD is in Hypocrisy...And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend' has been well received and has been mentioned for contributing to the abatement of Islamophobia. 'The book ends with the 9/11 tragedy, and Tayo's wisdom to understand the meaning that her relationship with Steve gave her, how it informed her not to respond to the attacks in hatred,' says Rebecca Danos, PhD. Michael T. Lyle, Jr, News Reporter/Writer for AM 1220 WQUN Radio, adds 'In the post-9/11 environment, Tayo not only manages to overcome the tragic events of that somber day, but by also proving through even in the most trying of times, hate and rage are no match for love and hope. A must-read for anyone seeking inspiration in times of despair and uncertainty.' The give-away is set to begin on January 1, 2016 and will last at least through the end of the year. The book will still be available for purchase in ebook and paperback formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes and other online retailers. However free electronic copies of the memoir can be requested by reaching out to the author via email at tytaytai@gmail.com, or on social media using her handle '@tytayai'. To request the book on Twitter or Instagram, tag Oredein with her user handle using the hashtags #HisPhdIsInHypocrisy, #FreeCopy, and #TheRootOfIslamIsPeace. Interested parties can also make a request by sending a message to the book's or author's Facebook fan pages. Tayo Oredein is a writer from Jamaica, Queens NY and has degrees from Wellesley College, Hunter College (CUNY) and Rutgers University. She also models and acts. 'His PhD is in Hypocrisy...And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend' is her first book. Oredein is available for interviews and appearances. For booking presentations, media appearances, interviews, and/or book-signings contact her directly at tytaytai@gmail.com
