According to the international Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, the rate of students going abroad is expected to increase by 12 percent every year. This number becomes relevant when one realizes the rise in quality and number of study abroad programs around the world.

Author Eleanor Goodall has a thorough understanding of the value of study abroad and world travel in general. Her new book, "Walking on Water," follows a young college girl as she studies in Venice and falls in love with a foreign land.

"Every year my husband and I take one of our grandchildren anywhere in the world they want to go," Goodall said, "we've been to Italy multiple times and my granddaughter especially loved Venice."

"Walking on Water" is inspired by Goodall's granddaughter's experiences with study abroad as she falls in love with the opportunity to learn a new language and culture, meet people from all over the world and even just sample new foods or drinks.

"The world today is one massive global society," Goodall said, "if we want our children to succeed we need to encourage them to see other parts of the world and what better time to do so than when they're young and open-minded."

With so many great study abroad opportunities available in schools around the world, Goodall just hopes her book will encourage people to try them.
