Vern Thibedeau Releases Memoir, THE DOOR

By: Jul. 26, 2013

The success of the television series "Prison Break" (2005-2009) proves that consumer interest in prison drama remains high, and it is to these consumers that former prison guard and author Vern Thibedeau offers his memoir "The Door: My Twenty-Six Years Working inside Canada's Prisons" (published by iUniverse). Thibedeau is launching a new marketing campaign for the book in 2013.

Thibedeau calls his book "... an honest and gritty look inside Canada's prisons, told from a 26-year correctional officer's point of view across five prisons."

An excerpt from "The Door":

"[Clifford Olson had] contacted the RCMP in BC and told them he was willing to show them where he had buried more bodies. Of course he demanded a flight out to BC. So everything was arranged to escort him to the Kingston Airport, and it was decided he should have an armed escort.

We followed the escort vehicle to the airport and then waited until the plane took off. I'm not exactly sure why I was armed. I'm not certain if it was to protect the scumbag or if it was to stop and escape attempt. I don't think it would have bothered me to stop an escape; after all, if duty called -. But I'm not sure what I would have been able to do if someone had tried to get at him. It was bad enough dealing with 'normal killers,' but when it was someone who had killed several young people, well, that sort of put a different light on things."

Thibedeau's experiences cross more than two decades and five prisons. He dealt with murderers, rapists and thieves. He was once taken hostage. His memoir provides a detailed, honest and captivating look at the life of a Canadian prison guard.
