Mark van Dongen undertook a large research project on the topic of leadership development in 2012. He was fascinated with this topic and wonders why there were only a few structured books written on how to develop leaders in an organization. It prompted him in writing "Gear-Up!: Shift development of your leaders in high gear" (published by Xlibris AU).

This book explains the mechanism behind the development of leaders and how everyone can influence this process in the company. The models presented in this book are designed based on historical and current insights from various disciplines. It gives a multitude of practical examples on how the parts of this model works in business practices as well as three detailed business cases on reviews of global leadership development processes. It also shows how future changes will impact leaders and leadership and offers suggestions on how to be better prepared for it.

"This is the first book to provide an integrated approach on how to develop leaders and gives easy to use tools so that readers can work with their newly gained knowledge and apply this in their work environment," van Dongen says.

"Gear-Up!" provides insights into how development works so that everyone can optimize their own work environment. This book serves different reader-groups, namely HR professionals, C-level leaders and academic students.
