K. R. Pendergrass' debut novel, "Incompatible with Life: Bookworm One" (published by Archway Publishing), tells the story of a young book collector named Lindsey who finds a ransom note in a second-hand book and gets caught up in rescuing a kidnapped child. The book is the first in a planned series.

Lindsey's best friend, Eric, works at a local used bookstore - which works great for Lindsey, who is always on the lookout for special books to add to her collection. While reading "The Colorado Kid" by Stephen King, she discovers a photograph of a boy; a ransom note is written on the back.

Suddenly, a frenzied man attacks Eric at the store. He's looking for that specific copy of the book Lindsey just purchased. Lindsey and Eric conclude that the boy in the photo is in serious trouble, and the two friends become embroiled in a life-and-death struggle straight out of one of Lindsey's beloved books.

The novel touches upon the choices one has while in a difficult situation. Lindsey and Eric become voluntary heroes - choosing to act on their unspoken responsibility to help someone in need. Pendergrass hopes readers will appreciate the Christian values spread throughout the narrative, particularly the concept of free will and why God allows people to make the choices they do.
