It is the long-awaited first book in The Numair Chronicles which Tortall fans have been clamoring for since meeting Numair Salmalín in the early 1990s. Numair was featured in Pierce's highly-lauded Song of the Lioness quartet and was a major character in her The Immortals quartet.
