LIVERMORE, Calif.

It was a grandson's request that finally made author and climber Bob Villarreal sit down and record the stories of his 30 solo climbs through the Andes. "Clawing for the Stars: A Solo Climber in the Highest Andes" (published by Abbott Press) is Villarreal's collection of stories of climbing this South American mountain range.

Villarreal's climbs began when he was in his 40s and continued into his 60s. He knew that climbing alone in the most remote parts of the Andes posed a great peril to his life. Villarreal fell in love with the mountain range, though, and continued making his climbs. At times, he had close calls with death, but he continued moving onward and upward.

Villarreal presents a unique format for his book by pairing it with his website - http://www.bobvillarreal.com - that provides more information for readers. The content brings each chapter to life with Google Tours, photographs, movies and musical slide shows - all of which are designed to help the reader feel they are accompanying the author on his climbs.

An excerpt from: "Clawing for the Stars":

"A casual stare to the west and north confirms the immensity of this part of the Atacama Desert. It begins at the Pacific shoreline, ninety miles away, and rushes east, bounding over Andean plateaus and ranges, gradually rising until it slams headlong into the mountain massifs and their unyielding slopes."
