The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday Set for Today

Today, January 3, artists from the exhibition Crossing Brooklyn: Art from Bushwick, Bed-Stuy and Beyond take over Target First Saturday with a special curated evening of music, comedy, and performances. Highlights include music by Grammy Award-winning collective Snarky Puppy; Greg Barris's comedy showcase Heart of Darkness, featuring comedian Janeane Garofalo; and a performance by Chop and Quench, comprised of members of the cast and band of the musical Fela!.

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis.

*Denotes a free ticketed program. Tickets are handed out at the Visitor Center one hour prior to each program.

5 p.m. Music: Grammy Award-winning collective Snarky Puppy plays an infectious mix of jazz, funk, and world music. Part of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concerts.

*6 p.m. Community Talk: Project EATS artist Linda Goode Bryant leads a conversation with other urban farmers about the joys and challenges of growing food in NYC.

6:30 p.m. Performance: Jazz percussionist Ches Smith creates a unique musical score to activate artist David Horvitz's installation of suspended bells in Crossing Brooklyn.

*6:30-8 p.m. Hands-On Art: Explore printmaking techniques to reimagine a scene from your neighborhood.

7 p.m. Music: DJ Selly and Asen from Fon play unique selections of American and British soul, nu jazz, broken beat, and old-fashioned house music.

7 p.m. Dance Workshop: Ani Taj and the Dance Cartel invite you to participate in a vibrant, immersive dance experience.

7 p.m. Talk: Blair Murphy, Susan Jahoda, and Vicky Virgin present recent work by BFAMFAPHd and lead a dialogue about the impact of debt on creative people.

7:30-9 p.m. Pop-Up Poetry: Happen upon short performances by emerging and established voices in spoken word.

8:15 p.m. Kids Corner: Ventriloquist Nigel "Docta Gel" Dunkley uses an ensemble of puppets to bring to life the story of Cindy Hot Chocolate, a young girl growing up in Geltown.

*8:30 p.m. Comedy: Greg Barris presents his comedy showcase Heart of Darkness, featuring comedian Janeane Garofalo, music, and other performances.

8:30 p.m. Music: Chop and Quench, comprised of members of the cast and band of the musical Fela!, bring classic Afrobeat to Brooklyn. Led by Tony Award-nominated Sahr Ngaujah.

9 p.m. Talk: Artist D'hana Perry presents LOOSE, an improvisational video/music piece involving deejaying, remixing, and conversations with gender non-conforming people of color.

9 p.m. Book Club: A discussion and creative-writing activity for queer and trans youth. Led by Jaime Shearn Coan, a Brooklyn-based educator who teaches writing at the City College of New York.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 11 p.m. and includes entrance to galleries and events. Programs are subject to change without notice. For more information, visit www.brooklynmuseum.org. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m. Parking is a flat rate of $5 from 5 to 11 p.m.
