Pacific Symphony Announces WOODWIND MAGIC, 1/20January 3, 2013Rich, bright and highly expressive, chamber works by the masters showcase Pacific Symphony's woodwind musicians at their finest during "Woodwind Magic," the next concert in the Cafe Ludwig chamber series. Charming piano sensation and host Orli Shaham leads principal Symphony musicians in works from the 18th to 20th centuries. On flute, Benjamin Smolen captures the expressive melodies and quick trills of Prokofiev's energetic Flute Sonata in discourse with piano. Then the velvety smooth sound of the clarinet, played by Benjamin Lulich, is featured in four movements from Bruch's Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, with Robert Becker on viola, and Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo. The concert concludes as Jessica Pearlman, oboe; Rose Corrigan, bassoon; and Keith Popejoy, horn, join Lulich and Shaham for Mozart's Quintet in E-flat Major, known for its perfect balance among the five instruments.

Cutting Ball Theater Announces Mellon GrantJanuary 3, 2013San Francisco's cutting-edge Cutting Ball Theater announces that the company has been awarded a grant for $166,000 from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to fund a three-year residency for resident playwright Andrew Saito. The grant will give Saito a full time salary and health benefits at Cutting Ball for the entire three years, with options to receive additional developmental funds. The grant is Cutting Ball's largest grant to date.
Ford's Audiences Raise $88K for Martha's TableJanuary 3, 2013Ford's Theatre Society announced that a donation drive during performances of A Christmas Carol has raised $88,040.67 for the Washington-based charity Martha's Table. Donations were collected November 18-December 26, 2012. In addition to the curtain call collection, patrons also were encouraged to make donations through the Ford's Theatre Box Office and members of the Ford's Theatre Society staff donated money to the campaign. On December 12, members of the cast of A Christmas Carol volunteered by preparing meals at Martha's Table.
