Pianist Shai Wosner Performs Recital at SubCulture NYC Tonight

Pianist Shai Wosner will perform a Franz Schubert-themed recital program at SubCulture NYC tonight, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. - the first recital in SubCulture's new piano series, with 14 performances over 15 days, featuring prominent jazz, classical, and rock pianists. Tickets to the recital are priced at $25 and available on the SubCulture website. Mr. Wosner, noted as a pianist at the "front rank of the Schubertians" by BBC Music Magazine, will play Schubert's Klavierstück in E-flat minor, D. 946, No. 1, Jörg Widmann's Idyll and Abyss (Six Schubert Reminiscences), and Schubert's final Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960.

In recent seasons Mr. Wosner has been immersing himself into Schubert's music, and critics have widely praised his interpretations of the composer's solo works, both in concert and in recording. Following a recent recital of the same program for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, The New York Times praised Mr. Wosner's "clever contextualization," and after a recital including Schubert's works at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater, The Washington Post called his performance "enthralling" and "technically remarkable." Mr. Wosner's most recent recording, released by Onyx in October 2011, features a selection of solo piano works by Schubert that incorporate elements of folk music. In its review of the album, Gramophonemagazine wrote, "With this recital Shai Wosner declares himself a Schubertian of unfaltering authority and character."

Mr. Wosner will continue to present Schubert works in recital throughout the 2013-14 season, with performances at Cal State University in Fresno (November 22), for Cal Performances at Hertz Hall in Berkeley (November 24), at Union College in Schenectady, NY (March 13), and at the Leffler Performance Center in Elizabethtown, PA (April 5).

Mr. Wosner has attracted international recognition for his exceptional artistry, musical integrity, and creative insight. His performances of a broad range of repertoire from Beethoven and Mozart to Schoenberg and Ligeti, as well as music by his contemporaries, communicates his imaginative programming and intellectual curiosity. He has appeared with numerous major orchestras in North America and Europe and is the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. Mr. Wosner's orchestral engagements this season include Mozart piano concertos with the Hamburger Symphoniker, the BBC Scottish Symphony, and the Discovery Ensemble at Boston's Jordan Hall. He plays Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto with the Pasadena Symphony and the German premiere of Michael Hersch's concerto "Along the Ravines" (a work he commissioned with his BB Trust Award and premiered with the Seattle Symphony in 2012) with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie-Saarbrücken. His next recording, with frequent recital partner violinist Jennifer Koh, featuring works by Janácek, Bartók, and Kurtág, will be released by Cedille Records on October 29, 2013.
