Photo Flash: Lansbury Toasts Maye Backstage At Her Met Show

By:

Marilyn Maye, who, for RCA Records, was the first to record Broadway songs such as "Cabaret," "Step to the Rear," "Sherry," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and other Broadway show songs before the shows opened, is in the midst of an exhilarating run of success. The 82-year-old singer is playing to sell-out crowds in an exclusive nine-show engagement at The Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, through Sunday October 17. On Thursday, the night before her Metropolitan Room opening, Maye received the Mabel Mercer Award at the 21st annual New York Cabaret Convention at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center.

It was backstage at Lincoln Center that Maye shared a few moments with Lansbury, who had just taken part in the festivities by introducing Marian Seldes, the evening's other major honoree. Lansbury promised to see Maye's show, a performer who has come to be identified with several Jerry Herman songs, especially "It's Today" from "Mame" for which, as we all know, Lansbury won her first of five Tony Awards.

On Saturday October 9, Broadway legend Angela Lansbury attended Maye's "Her Own Kind of Broadway," and visited with the remarkably durable singer after the show.

Maye's other recent awards include the 2010 MAC Award for Celebrity Artist of the Year (for the second year in a row), a 2007 Bistro Award for Lifetime Achievement, and New York Nightlife Awards for outstanding cabaret vocalist for two years running, 2008 and 2009.

"Her Own Kind of Broadway" opened October 8 and plays to 17. The music charge is $30, with a two-drink minimum. For information, or to order online, visit www.metropolitanroom.com. For reservations call 212/206-0440. Rated "Best of New York" by New York Magazine, the Nightlife and Bistro Award-winning Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, was recently called "the best of New York's smaller clubs" by The New York Times.
