HAMLET in Modern Verse Translation to be Presented at Sheen Center and NYC Schools
In advance of the public performances, Hamlet will be performed across NYC area schools including St. Catherine Academy, Edward R. Murrow High School, and more.
From May 20-24 at Sheen Center, The Acting Company will present Hamlet, in a modern verse translation by Lisa Peterson, directed by Chika V. Ike. The 75-minute adaptation, commissioned by and in partnership with Play On Shakespeare, brings this foundational tragedy to New Yorkers across the City. Centering Hamlet's struggle to decide how to respond to his father's death and his mother's remarriage, this production is the perfect entrance point to this powerful story of grief and vengeance. The young ensemble brings this complex story to life with clear, bold language and high-energy performances that are sure to engage audiences.
In advance of the public performances, Hamlet will be performed across NYC area schools including St. Catherine Academy, Edward R. Murrow High School, and I.S. 73 from April 29 through May 15. Designed to connect with middle and high school audiences, Hamlet is filled with all the ghosts, duels, emotion, and excitement that entertain students as it draws them into the language of dramatic literature. Each in-school residency includes a post-show discussion and offers The Acting Company's award-winning Learning Through Theater workshops.
The cast features Caroline Campos as Horatio/Ophelia, Rob Kellogg as Laertes, Marquis D. Gibson as Polonius, Breezy Leigh as Gertrude, Marion Grey as Hamlet, and Erick Lindsey as Claudius.
Tickets for public performances of Hamlet, May 20-24 at Sheen Center, are available here (sliding scale pricing). The Sheen Center for Thought & Culture is located at 18 Bleecker Street, between Mott and Elizabeth. The performances will take place in the Frank Shiner Theater – their 80-seat black box space.
