Virtual Universe: The Explosive Universe with Jackie Faherty

The nighttime sky is filled with explosive objects. Join Jackie Faherty as she leads a tour of the Milky Way, highlighting regions where stars are born, where they die, and everything energetic that lies in between. On the first Tuesday of each month, visitors are invited to step inside the world's largest cosmic atlas and take a trip from Earth to the edges of observable space. Virtual Universe shows are live and interactive programs that include question-and-answer sessions. The Museum invites all to take the journey of a lifetime.

Adventures in the Global Kitchen: Planet Barbecue

Bring your bib and join "Master Griller" Steven Raichlen, host of the popular PBS television show "Primal Grill with Steven Raichlen," as he discusses the many different types of barbecue. Explore the distinctive tastes and styles that can be found in different regions. Tastings will include South African sosaties, pork kebabs with dried apricots and curry.

Evening Bat Walk in Central Park

At dusk, bats leave the warm spaces under city roofs to feed on flying insects. Join Brad Klein, Danielle Gustafson, and other members of the New York City Bat Group for a bat walk through Central Park. Aided by a detector that amplifies bats' high-frequency chirps, bat watchers monitor and catalogue the species that call New York home.

Please note that you must register at least one week in advance. Rain date is Saturday, July 31. Meet on the main Museum steps at Central Park West and 79th Street.

The Oddball Innermost Planet: Exploring Mercury with the MESSENGER Spacecraft

The MESSENGER spacecraft is the first space probe to visit the planet Mercury in more than 30 years. Join Sean Solomon, director of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution and principal investigator of the MESSENGER mission, as he discusses the importance of understanding Mercury's high-density composition, unusual geological history, and its magnetic field. MESSENGER flew by the innermost planet twice in 2008, once in the fall of 2009, and is on course to enter Mercury's orbit in March 2011.

This public lecture is the Barringer Invitational Lecture of the 73rd Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, held in New York from July 26 to July 30.

Celestial Highlights: Summer Streakers with Joe Rao

Join Joe Rao and enjoy the brilliant performance of the Perseid meteor shower, one of the best of the annual meteor displays, and observe a number of summer constellations as well as the beautiful Milky Way. On the last Tuesday of each month, enjoy a live presentation under the brilliant stars of the Zeiss Mark IX Star Projector. This tour of the heavens offers a view of the constantly changing night sky. Learn about the current positions of the moon, planets, and stars, as well as visual spectacles like meteor showers, eclipses, and conjunctions.

The Museum is open daily, 10 am-5:45 pm.
The Museum is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Space Show and SonicVision Hours
Space Shows are shown Monday through Friday every half hour, 10:30 am- 4:30 pm except Wednesdays (first show on Wednesday begins at 11 a.m.). Saturday through Sunday every half hour, 10:30 am-5 pm. SonicVision is shown on selected Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and 8:30 pm.

Admission
Suggested general admission, which supports the Museum's scientific and educational endeavors and includes 45 Museum halls and the Rose Center for Earth and Space, is $16 (adults) suggested; $12 (students/seniors) suggested; $9 (children) suggested.

The Museum offers discounted combination ticket prices that include suggested general admission plus special exhibitions, IMAX films, and Space Shows.
o Museum plus special exhibition, IMAX film, or Space Show: $24 (adults), $18 (students/seniors), $14 (children)
o Museum Supersaver, which includes the Space Show, IMAX, and all special exhibitions: $32 (adults), $24.50 (students/seniors), $20 (children)

Visitors who wish to pay less than the suggested Museum admission and also want to attend a special exhibition, IMAX film, or Space Show may do so only on-site at the Museum. To the amount they wish to pay for general admission, they should add $20 (adults), $16.50 (students/seniors), or $11 (children) for a Space Show, special exhibition, or IMAX film.
