Tens of Thousands Gather for Moon Lantern Festival

A capacity crowd of more than 25,000 gathered at Elder Park, with thousands more on the Riverbank Footbridge and outside Adelaide Oval on Sunday 1 October to enjoy Moon Lantern Festival. The event featured a parade led by the stunning 55 person long Hong Kong Dragon, followed by another 36 feature lanterns and more than 800 individuals carrying smaller lanterns. Moon Lantern Festival also featured free performances, roving entertainers and gourmet food, creating a vibrant multicultural experience. The event concluded with a spectacular fireworks display over the River Torrens.

A key event in Adelaide's calendar, OzAsia Festival's Moon Lantern Festival is embracEd Strongly by the public. With excellent springtime weather, the authorised capacity was quickly reached. Other vantage points around the precinct where people could view the parade included the Riverbank Footbridge and north side riverbank areas of the River Torrens.

For the safety and security of everyone at Moon Lantern Festival event site and parade, capacity was managed via three entry gates. Once capacity was reached in Elder Park, patrons were directed to the northern side of the river, the Riverbank Footbridge and Lucky Dumpling Market on the Adelaide Riverbank lawns, to view the parade and fireworks.

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO & Artistic Director Douglas Gautier says, "We are so pleased that Moon Lantern Festival continues to be such a popular event and receives such a positive turnout. We thank SAPOL for helping to manage capacity and keep everyone safe. Next year, when Adelaide Festival Centre's redevelopment works are complete, we will have more areas for parade-watchers to sit, eat, and enjoy the evening and we look forward to sharing this special event with even more people."

Adelaide Festival Centre's OzAsia Festival continues for a final week until Sunday 8 October. A number of fantastic performances are still to come, including Japanese theatrical masterpiece The Dark Inn; vocaloid opera The End, starring anime favourite Hatsune Miku; Korean physical comedy masters The Ongals; and Indian dance extraordinaire Aakash Odedra in one-man show Rising.
