2013 is set to reinforce State Opera of South Australia's (SOSA) outstanding reputation for bringing new and exciting opera to Adelaide audiences. SOSA will stage three contrasting but equally brilliant main-stage spectacles, including two rarely performed works in brand new productions, and the return of a perennial favourite.

The 2013 season opens next month with Richard Strauss's magnificent Salome - in a stunning new Opera Conference production which has wowed audiences interstate. '...a sexy, bloody spectacle.' The Telegraph. '...garish, risky, decadent - and glorious' The Age

Described by SOSA CEO and Artistic Director, Timothy Sexton as '100 minutes of brilliance' Salome is shaping up to be one of the must-see events for South Australia.

"It has been nineteen years since State Opera last staged Salome, and this stunning new Opera Conference production is quite the coup for South Australia. The production is set to be a true highlight in 2013 for music lovers", Mr. Sexton said.

The operatic tour-de-force bringshighly respected director Gale Edwards back to her home town of Adelaide.

"This piece is directed by Gale Edwards of La bohème fame, with set designs by Brian Thomson and costumes by Julie Lynch, which will leave audiences stunned', Mr. Sexton said.

The cast for Salome has attracted some of the country's biggest voices to Adelaide, with SOSA billing its 2013 season as the 'year of the voice'.

"We are thrilled to be hosting some of operas biggest names such as South Australian born, UK based soprano Kate Ladner in the title role, tenor Hubert Francis as Herod and Elizabeth Campbell as Herodias. SA favourite Douglas McNicol (who has been nominated for a prestigious Helpmann Award for his work in Fidelio for SOSA last year) will be a sensation as the ill-fated Jokanaan. It is going to be a treat for music lovers to hear these voices in the Festival Theatre for this season," Mr Sexton said.

Maestro Arvo Volmer will conduct the stellar cast and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to bring this great operatic masterpiece to life on the Festival Theatre stage.

Salome is the first of SOSA's three main stage subscription operas for 2013. In October, the company will present a true rarity in Verdi's La forza del destino (the force of destiny) followed by Puccini's classic Madama Butterfly in November.

"We (SOSA) are proud to bring an incredible line up of performances to Adelaide audiences. In 2013 we will reach more audiences than ever before and further cement Adelaide and South Australia's reputation as a leader in opera in Australia" Mr Sexton said.

Salome runs at the Festival Theatre on 24,27, 29, 31 August at 7.30pm.

Tickets for Salome are available through BASS 131 246 or online at www.bass.net.au
