PICT Classic Theatre's Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, by Frank McGuinness, opens just about 100 years after the historical WWI events that are authentically portrayed in the performance. Running today, September 4, through September 20 at the Stephen Foster Memorial, the play, appropriate for ages 12+, leaves audiences with a better emotional understanding of events that changed the course of millions of lives and a sense of the surprising ways that WWI continues to shape the world today. A Contemporary Theatre Board President Colin Chapman announces that Artistic Director Kurt Beattie will retire at the end of ACT's 2015 50th Anniversary Season and will be succeeded by John Langs, a nationally recognized theatre artist who has served as ACT's Associate Artistic Director since 2013. Beattie, ACT's Artistic Director since 2003, will assume the role of Artistic Director Emeritus upon his retirement, stewarding long-term projects already in development as well as acting and directing in upcoming seasons. The Public Theater announced a four-week extension for the world premiere musical HAMILTON, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Inspired by the book 'Alexander Hamilton' by Ron Chernow and directed by Thomas Kail, HAMILTON begins performances on Tuesday, January 20 and was originally scheduled to close on Sunday, February 22. The musical will now run an additional four weeks to Sunday, March 22, with an official press opening on Tuesday, February 17. (more...)

New Century Theatre Company (NCTC) has announced its dynamic 2015 season will include 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winner The Flick by Annie Baker and the powerhouse family drama Festen by David Eldridge. The Flick will be directed by NCTC Company Member MJ Sieber, who directed David Mamet's The Water Engine at Strawberry Theatre Workshop in 2007. Festen will be directed by Wilson Milam, who has directed for Seattle Repertory Theatre (God of Carnage, Glengarry Glen Ross) and was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction of the 2006 production of Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore on Broadway. Will love finally find Frankie? or will it prove too elusive? Can she solve the riddle of crime in time? Directed by Pear veteran Michael Champlin, and featuring The Pear's Artistic Director Diane Tasca as the irascible, indomitable, chain-smoking and hard-drinking Frankie, the production runs May 1 through May 24, 2015.
