BWW Review: Mad Cow's All-Female '1776' is Stunningly Moving, Revolutionary Theatre
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 29, 2016

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary to rethink a centuries-entrenched conception, it must be done with ideas audacious and revolutionary enough to forever upset the status quo. That was true in a small, stuffy Philadelphia room in 1776, and it is true now at Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre. While the newest production from the Church Street company might not have the same lasting impact as the creation of the United States, it is undoubtedly one of the best theatrical productions that Central Florida has seen in recent years. BWW Blog: Sarah Kleist - HEATHERS the (Feminist) Musical
by Guest Blogger: WPPAC's HEATHERS - Sep 29, 2016

In recent years, theatre has seen a resurgence of musicals that align with some of the ideals of third wave feminism; HEATHERS by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy is one of those musicals. I love this show for many reasons; the catchy music, not to mention the hilarious book-but what I love most about this show is its progressive representation of femininity and sexuality. In an era where Donald Trump is the Republican candidate, this show is extremely important.  (more...)

by Emma Cann - Sep 28, 2016

The cult musical, Little Shop of Horrors, has long been a favourite amongst cinema and theatre fans alike. Theatre in Historic Places: OKTOBERFEST THE MUSICAL at the Crest Theatre
by Ellen Dostal - Sep 28, 2016

Frances Seymour Fonda, actor Henry Fonda's second wife, was only 32 years old when the theater she commissioned architect Arthur W. Hawes to build opened in December of 1940. Originally known as the Westwood Theater, it was designed to be a performance space for live productions and for a short time it did fulfill that mission. Across town, movie musicals like Busby Berkeley's Strike Up the Band and Down Argentine Way were becoming box office hits as Tinseltown capitalized on the Popularity of established young stars such as Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney and soon-to-be stars like pin-up girl Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. BWW Profile: Benedict Cumberbatch Emmy-Nominated Star of Stage and Screen
by Matt Tamanini - Sep 15, 2016

Though only 38 years old, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has already amassed an impressive list of credits on stage, on television, and on the big screen. Though he has yet to grace a Broadway stage, I have a feeling that that is just an eventuality as his Popularity continues to skyrocket on this side of the Atlantic. Today we are taking a look at his career from the British stage in 'Hedda Gabler,' 'After the Dance,' and 'Frankenstein' to his work on film in '12 Years a Slave,' 'August: Osage County,' and 'Star Trek: Into Darkness,' to his iconic work on TV as the 'high-functioning sociopath' titular character on the BBC's 'Sherlock,' for which he is nominated a second time, in addition to his 2013 nomination for HBO's 'Parade's End.' BWW Review: SISTER ACT, New Alexandra Theatre, 12 September 2016
by Emma Cann - Sep 13, 2016

Jamie Wilson and the Leicester Curve's new production of Sister Act contains all of the ingredients for a smash-hit musical: a star director, a celebrity lead, a well-known, beloved story based on a popular film, and a plethora of sequins and catchy tunes.  Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act follows the story of Deloris Van Cartier, an aspiring Philadelphia club singer. When Doloris witnesses her mobster boyfriend Curtis commit murder, she rushes to the police and old high school friend, Eddie, hides her in the one place she surely won't be found: a convent. The Mother Superior abhors Deloris' outspoken and extravagant nature. However, Deloris soon forms a close bond with the other sisters, transforming their pitiful choir with soul and funk versions of their usual hymns. When the convent choir's growing Popularity puts Deloris' safety at risk, the sisters and even Mother Superior risk everything to protect her.  (more...)
