American Ballet Theatre will host a memorial celebration for beloved colleague and ballet legend Frederic Franklin on Monday, October 14 at 4:30 P.M. in the Concert Hall at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. The memorial will be highlighted by film tributes as well as performances and guest speakers from many of the companies with which Franklin was affiliated, including ABT, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Richmond Ballet, Tulsa Ballet and Cincinnati Ballet. Our Fall Program will feature World Premiere Petrouchka from Nicolo Fonte coupled with the World Premiere of Carmen from Christopher Stowell. The holiday season features the return of Christopher Stowell's popular A Holiday Revue and George Balanchine's The Nutcracker. The heart of our Winter program is the World Premiere of Lola de Avila's Giselle. In the spring we bring a mixed repertory program, Chromatic Quartet, which features Company Premiere George Balanchine's Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Company Premiere Christopher Wheeldon's Liturgy, Val Caniparoli's Lambarena and a World Premiere new work. Giancarlo Guerrero, music director of the Nashville Symphony and principal guest conductor of Cleveland Orchestra Miami, conducts The Cleveland Orchestra in concerts at Severance Hall that open with Igor Stravinsky's Petrouchka (complete ballet music, 1947 revision). After intermission, Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster William Preucil is soloist in the world premiere performances of Stephen Paulus's Violin Concerto No. 3. The concerto was commissioned by The Cleveland Orchestra with the generous support of Linda and Jack Hoeschler and Peter and Mary Dahlen. Petrouchka is an often performed piece that can sometimes feel tired and perfunctory. Along with The Firebird and The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky's other two big ballets from the same period (all of which remarkably flowed from the composer's pen within five years), Petrouchka requires a deft hand at the helm to feel fresh. Luckily, in the hands of Jacques Lacombe and the New Jersey Symphony, a fine fresh take was on the menu. The New Jersey players did a fine job, and even if this music was not their typical fare, Maestro Lecombe managed to bring excitement and subtle inner colors to the surface throughout. (more...)

The National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYOC) will embark on the TD Music 50th Anniversary National Tour, with Maestro Jacques Lacombe on the podium. This three-week venture commences in late July following the NYOC's training session. The tour will also feature travel to the west coast for the first time in five years. It is also with great excitement the NYOC proudly announces world-renowned Canadian tenor Ben Heppner to perform at the NYOC's Stratford date on July 25th, as well as performing a Canadian work by Kati Agocs, Composer-in-Residence with the NYOC. Her commissioned work, Perpetual Summer, will receive its world premiere July 28 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Another Canadian composer, the late Jacques Hétu, composed Sur les rives du Saint-Maurice, a work dedicated to Maestro Lacombe and is featured on this tour. (more...)

American Repertory Ballet, New Jersey's preeminent ballet company, voted NJ's Favorite Dance Company in the Jersey Arts People's Choice awards, is delighted to announce its 2013-2014 Season of performances around the state. Season highlights include three major productions: the premiere of Artistic Director Douglas Martin's Romeo and Juliet at State Theatre in New Brunswick, with live music played by the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Kynan Johns; ARB's 50th Annual Nutcracker Season, which will span five weekends at theaters across NJ and include a “Celebrate the Legacy” reception; and Night of Fire, a program featuring the premiere of Martin's Firebird and the company premiere of Kirk Peterson's Afternoon of a Faun, at McCarter Theatre in Princeton. The 2013-2014 season will also include brand new works by American choreographers Mary Barton, Trinette Singleton, and Kirk Peterson and revivals of works by Ann Marie DeAngelo, Patrick Corbin, and the late Gerald Arpino, Joffrey Ballet co-founder and choreographer.
