Dale F. Shaffer Pens UNPREPARED
by BWW News Desk - Jun 21, 2016

Half of the U.S. population has died from direct attacks and Fallout from World War III, which began after international peace talks broke down in the Middle East. A missile strike by Israel against Iran - and that country's counter-attack with missiles - lead all major nations around the globe into the devastating battle. Thus begins a new novel by Dale F. Shaffer that centers on the end times and all the horrors that entails. In 'Unprepared,' one-fourth of the world's population has died, as foretold by Revelation 6:1-8. Christian survivors begin to realize the biblical prophecy has come to pass, releasing the Seven Seals and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Taylor family of Ohio is one set of such survivors, and they are stunned to learn that people in the major cities and half of the people living in their country have died, with more death to come due to radiation poisoning and food shortages throughout the country. When a new world government is formed, bringing a seven-year peace treaty, all seems to be moving in the right direction. But a new Jewish temple built on Temple Mount is a signal that true evil has not been vanquished but simply changed its disguise. Churches and families become divided, and the situation will test faith as never before. Serving as teacher, deacon, elder and church administrator - as well as 40 years of studying Bible prophecy - gives author Dale F. Shaffer unique insight into scripture and faith. The former state trooper, chief of police and U.S. Marine has a degree in police administration and graduated from the FBI National Academy. He also wrote the 'Detective Lieutenant Ed Slate' mysteries series. Shaffer lived in the Chicago area for more than 20 years and now lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. BWW Review: World Premiere BIG SKY Examines How the Truth Shall Set You Free
by Shari Barrett - Jun 20, 2016

The World Premiere of BIG SKY written by Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros and brilliantly directed by John Rando (Tony and Outer Critics Award winner for Urinetown) at the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse fits in nicely with the theme of the Geffen's upcoming 'Moments of Truth' season as revelations spoken by each cast member finally allow them to drop all pretense and work together toward a goal for their common good. And while the ending seems a bit obscure at first, listening to everyone talking about it as they were leaving the theater convinced me that something thought-provoking had just been shared with all of us. We meet five women in Merri Biechler's new play OCCUPATION - three mothers and two daughters - none related by blood, all connected by something larger. An undercurrent of anger bubbles just beneath the surface and we are told repeatedly that these are days of caution.  (more...)

BWW Review: First Run Theater's Engaging TRICK AND ANOTONIA
by Chris Gibson - Jul 19, 2016

I did some creative work for First Run Theater during their early years, underscoring some shows, and even directing a couple of one acts. I admired the fact that they provided a testing ground, a full staging, of works by local playwrights. That's an opportunity that goes far beyond a staged reading, and actually brings an author's vision to life with an immediacy that's filtered through the talent that presents it. I went back to a theater I hadn't stepped a foot in in years, and saw what I think is one their finest productions, TRICK AND ANOTONIA, written by Jenn Ciavarella. Although it could still use a bit of tightening, its a compelling tale, the actors all do solid work, and Landon Shaw's direction and scenic design is very thoughtfully conceived and executed. BWW Review: MR. WOLF is Thought-provoking, Dark, Confounding at Cleveland Play House
by Roy Berko - Apr 11, 2016

Over the last several years much attention has been drawn to the abduction of children and, in rare cases, their return. A short time ago, the Cleveland area had the spotlight placed on it when three young ladies, Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, were freed after their many years of captivity in the Tremont home of Ariel Castro. This event makes one of the basic tenets of MR. WOLF, now on stage at Cleveland Play House's Outcalt Theatre, quite inciting to local audiences. (more...)
