Coming up next for Mint Theater Company (Jonathan Bank, Producing Artistic Director; Jen Soloway, Managing Director) will be the first ever New York revival of A Day by the Sea by N.C. Hunter, directed by Austin Pendleton. This will be the Mint's first production as a resident theater company at Theatre Row. Performances will begin July 22nd and continue through September 24th at their new home at the Beckett Theater at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street between 9th and Dyer Avenues). Opening night of Dance Theater of Harlem's 2015 season at City Center began with a curtain speech by Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, who was visibly more excited and confident on this third anniversary of the rebirth of the legendary company than she had been in 2014 when DTH danced at Jazz at Lincoln Center after a nine-year performing hiatus. Her contagious enthusiasm proved to be well founded as the evening progressed with a quadruple bill called 'What's New' that showcased the vastly improved technique and artistry of the 18-member troupe.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic and its Music Director Gustavo Dudamel opened the 2014/15 season with A Celebration of John Williams: Opening Night Gala Concert, a star-studded evening honoring the greatest film composer of all time at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, September 30. The event featured the LA Phil, led by Dudamel, world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, soloists Dan Higgins, Glenn Paulson and Michael Valerio, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets and the Los Angeles Children's Chorus, led by Anne Tomlinson and supported by members from the Angeles Chorale. Thank you. I have to say that as the podium came out, which meant that was my cue, my mother-in-law said, 'Oh, shoot.' (Laughter.) True story -- she was getting into the music. (Laughter.) Welcome to the White House, everybody.
As an undergraduate theater major in the early 1970s, I heard music everywhere. It seemed to pour out of every office and workspace around the department. (And in the LP era, if you wanted more than the radio, this meant schlepping a twenty pound record player and a dozen or so albums from your home to the campus, sometimes requiring back-and-forth trips from the car. If you go to that much trouble, you want to keep the music playing.) In the hushed costume shop with its quietly industrious all female staff, Broadway ruled, with Stephen Sondheim's recent Company and Follies in heavy rotation. It was 'men only' in the scene shop where I listened to male balladeers like James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot while unhappily working off assigned crew hours. Jazz classes (my favorites) in the dance department were conducted to the pre-disco sounds of Isaac Hayes and the Temptations. And late night cast parties were never complete without spins of Bette Midler's first two albums.
