Variety reports that former Livent theatre producers Garth Drabinksy and his business partner Myron Gottlieb will find out Aug. 5th what their penalty will be for their conviction for defrauding investors. The date was set today, Tuesday July 7th. by a judge in a Toronto court.

The Financial Post is reporting that former Livent theatre producers Garth Drabinsky and his business partner Myron Gottlieb will likely be granted bail while pending an appeal of their verdict and sentence, which will be announced tomorrow, August 5th. It is thought the pair will spend no more than a few hours in custody, should they be sentenced to a prison term.

Variety reports that the sentencing hearing for former Broadway producers Garth Drabinsky and Myron Gottlieb got under way Monday in Toronto, with the prosecution calling for a sentence of eight to 10 years for each defendant.

Seattle Theatre Group (STG) presents The Tragically Hip on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 8:00pm at the Moore Theatre. Formed in 1983 in Kingston, Ontario, The Tragically Hip came together with childhood friends Gordon Downie (vocals), Bobby Baker (guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass), and Johnny Fay (drums). The group took their name from a Michael Nesmith video entitled Elephant Parts and focused on making a name for themselves in the local scene during the mid-'80s. While performing Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern, MCA Records president Bruce Dickinson was impressed by the Hip's infectious live presence and offered them a deal. A self-titled eponymous EP appeared in 1987, but it took the band two years to get critical attention.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced casting for its production of RAGTIME in the Eisenhower Theater April 18 - May 10, 2009. Based on a 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, the production features book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and will be directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge. The musical is part of the Kennedy Center's Broadway: The Third Generation, a series celebrating the current generation of Broadway musical composers. The official press night will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

The sorry story of Livent came to a close in a Toronto courtroom today as Ontario Superior Court Justice Mary Lou Benotto delivered her judgment. 'The creative success that you achieved due to your company was spectacular,' said Benotto. But her tone quickly changed as she cited a 'deliberate misrepresentation' in Livent's public offering and 'widespread and long-standing' fraud thereafter. 'I have been satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that you knew what was happening . . . That's a guilty verdict.'
