All-Yale Cast and Crew Set for KISS ME, KATE at University Theater Today

Yale will pay tribute to alumnus composer and lyricist Cole Porter (B.A. 1913) on the centennial of his graduation from the University by presenting his popular musical 'Kiss Me, Kate' in a concert version with an all-Yale cast and crew. Porter's riff on Shakespeare's 'Taming of the Shrew' will have two performances today, Jan. 19, at University Theater, 222 York St., at 2 and 8 p.m.

Today in 1948, opened at the Shubert Theatre. Kiss Me, Kate is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. It is structured as a play within a play, where the interior play is a musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. The original production starred Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang. Kiss Me, Kate was a response to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and other integrated musicals, and it proved to be his biggest hit and the only one of his shows to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. It won the first Tony Award presented for Best Musical, in 1949.

Happy Birthday, Cole Porter! Porter's many musicals include Fifty Million Frenchmen, DuBarry Was a Lady, Anything Goes and Can-Can, and his numerous hit songs include 'Night and Day', 'I Get a Kick out of You', 'Well, Did You Evah!' and 'I've Got You Under My Skin'. 1948's Kiss Me Kate was his most successful show, running for 1,077 performances in its original Broadway run. The production won the Tony Award for best musical (the first Tony awarded in that category), and Porter won for best composer and lyricist.

Jack Viertel, Artistic Director of New York City Center's Encores! series, today announced directors for the 2010-11 Encores! season: Kathleen Marshall will direct and choreograph the season opener, Bells Are Ringing, with music by Jule Styne and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, opening on November 18, 2010. Gary Griffin will direct Lost in the Stars, with music by Kurt Weill and book and lyrics by Maxwell Anderson, opening on February 3, 2011.
