Howard Scott Gallery to Present Rebecca Salter's RECENT PAINTINGS, 3/24-4/30
by BWW News Desk - Mar 24, 2011

Rebecca Salter, an artist born in 1955 and educated in southwestern England, made an unconventional decision upon completing her university studies to move to Japan in 1979 for a two-year stay - to study with an avant-garde ceramic artist in Kyoto, continuing her involvement in that medium. When informed of the unexpected death of her intended mentor two months before she was scheduled to depart for Japan, she forged ahead with the journey and was able to structure her own studies - remaining in Kyoto for six years. She immersed herself in Japanese life and culture [including mastering reading and writing Japanese] and even exhibited her works with some regularity, gaining a reputation in Kyoto.

Review - After The Revolution: The Life Of The Party
by Ben Peltz - Nov 13, 2010

Sure, in America the guilty have just as much a right to a fair trial as the innocent.  But when someone you believe is guilty doesn't get one, is that a wrong you can be all that enthused about righting?  That's one of the discussion points that might be mulled over by leftist radicals downing shots of vodka after taking in Amy Herzog's After The Revolution.  Unfortunately, this tantalizing moral dilemma is regulated to a throwaway point in a play that teases us with its political content while contenting itself with being a rather formulaic family drama.  It's a good one, for sure; well-written (despite an unsatisfying ending) with absorbing conflicts and director Carolyn Cantor's excellent cast is always engaging, but every so often the play reminds us of an interesting direction the author decided not to take.

Spotlight On NYMF: Brenda Braxton & TRAV'LIN
by Robert Diamond - Oct 6, 2010

Today we kick off our series on the 2010 New York Musical Theater Festival with the warm and fuzzy memories - as well as some less than fond remembrances - of the life and career of Broadway triple-threat leading lady Brenda Braxton. From the original company of DREAMGIRLS on Broadway under the direction of Michael Bennett to CATS and LEGS DIAMOND and George C. Wolfe's JELLY'S LAST JAM all the way up to her many stints in the Broadway revival of CHICAGO - as well as directing and recreating the original Bennett/Avian/Peters choreography for the post-9/11 star-studded DREAMGIRLS concert starring Audra McDonald, Lillias White and Heather Headley - we talk it all, plus all the exciting new musicals she is participating in - such as her NYMF starrer TRAVELIN' and another new musical reading, as well as projects of her own creation - both onstage and, now, behind-the-scenes! Ms. Braxton was generous enough to spend some time on a rainy afternoon earlier this week to discuss her career, the state of Broadway, the necessity of new musical theatre voices, working with Michael Bennett, and all the details on the new musical she is starring in that premieres this Friday at the NYMF, TRAVELIN' as well as some exciting news of what lies ahead!
