BWW Review: ALL SHOOK UP Searches for Love with the Music of Elvis Presley
by Shari Barrett - Mar 7, 2016

The iconic music of Elvis Presley inspired writer Joe Dipietro to create ALL SHOOK UP, a musical set in 1955 utilizing the rock 'n roll star's songs. The bottom line with Elvis's music is that it makes a lot of people very happy, even 50 years after it was recorded. And Dipietro thought, what other type of entertainment form does that? And that's when he came up with the Shakespeare comedies, which are very much about love and finding your joy, marriage, passion, and all the good stuff of life. And of course, frequent cases of mistaken identity! (more...)

BWW Review: THE LION Brings Raw Emotion to Arena Stage
by Barbara Johnson - Mar 5, 2016

The premise of THE LION is simple and honest: one actor accompanying Himself on guitar as he tells his story. The stage is spare, with painted walls, a radiator, a couple of chairs, and six guitars (one electric with an amplifier). It starts out innocently enough as writer and performer Benjamin Scheuer walks onstage in this touring production, dressed in a crisp blue suit and tie, rocker coif hairsprayed in place. As if playing an acoustic set in a small New York City concert venue, Scheuer launches into the opening song, 'Cookie-Tin Banjo,' with a charming smile, singing, 'My father has an old guitar and he plays me folk songs.' Thus begins his detailed coming-of-age story, which he tells in song as he cycles through each guitar. (more...)

BWW Review: Street Theater Company's IN THE HEIGHTS
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 5, 2016

Nashville audiences this weekend are treated to a unique opportunity insofar as In The Heights is concerned: two stunning and startling, yet somehow altogether different, productions of Miranda's first masterpiece (you young people who are caught up in the specter of Hamilton have this earlier work to thank for your newfound enthusiasm for musical theater) to be inspired by - two shows that are almost alarmingly good and amazingly performed. Daron Bruce and Lisa Forbis' cadre of young performers at Nashville's Hume Fogg Academic High School will deliver their rendition of In The Heights for only one more performance (tonight, on Nashville's Broadway, is the last of three shows), while Street Theatre Company's founding artistic director Cathy Street bids farewell to her adopted hometown of ten years with her beautifully directed staging at Bailey Middle School, which opened last night for the first of three weekends of performances. BWW Review: With Class and Clarity, Christine Andreas Brings the Music and Madness of CAFE SOCIETY to Feinstein's/54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Mar 5, 2016

In her new show, Café Society at Feinstein's/54 Below, Christine Andreas doesn't so much sing “Puttin' On the Ritz” (Irving Berlin) as personify it, channeling the attitude and era in which it was conceived. With just a tad of hip action, tipping shoulders, and an elongated ssss, the artist shares a really good time. “So, where are we going after the show . . . to Harlem's Savoy or The Copa? (The Copacabana) . . . ” This evening is about the late 1920s to the early '60s “an ongoing party of glamour and excess . . . when everybody was listening to the same music.” (more...)

BWW Review: RHINOCEROS: Collective Psychosis or The People's Choice?
by Nancy Grossman - Mar 5, 2016

The Suffolk University/Boston Playwrights' Theatre co-production of RHINOCEROS, newly adapted by Wesley Savick from Derek Prouse's translation, features a Boston setting, but maintains the themes of Eugene Ionesco's 1959 classic play from the Cold War era. Things being as they are, that sort of feels like the good old days, yet we are reminded that conformity, fascism, and totalitarianism have never gone out of style. (more...)
