Georg Friedrich Händels Alcina zählt zu den bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Musiktheaterwerken des Komponisten. Schon die Uraufführung im Jahr 1735 im neu errichteten Covent Garden Theatre gestaltete sich triumphal: Die brillanten, musikalisch wie technisch anspruchsvollen Solo-Partien, Chorszenen sowie die überaus wechselhafte Handlung mit Verkleidungs- und Verwandlungselementen rissen das Publikum zu Begeisterungsstürmen hin und erweisen sich heute, mehr als 250 Jahre nach der Erstaufführung, als unverändert effektvoll. Im November 2010 erklingt Händels Alcina zum ersten Mal im Haus am Ring.

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) will present its forty-first world premiere, To Cross the Face of the Moon / Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, commissioned by HGO through its Song of Houston project. Music by José 'Pepe' Martinez, music director of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, with libretto by acclaimed Broadway director and author Leonard Foglia, the opera will be performed in concert by a cast that includes mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte, baritone and HGO studio alumnus Octavio Moreno, and Martinez, together with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at the Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas. This will be Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán's only Houston performance in 2010.

Producers Jed Bernstein and Adam Zotovich announced today that Tony Award-winners James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave will return to the New York stage this Fall to star opposite one another in the Broadway Premiere of Alfred Uhry‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Driving Miss Daisy. Directed by David Esbjornson (The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia?), Driving Miss Daisy will begin performances on October 7, 2010, at the John Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street), with an official opening on Monday, October 25, 2010.
