DISNEY DOC. DIRECTORS: Jeff & Greg Sherman of THE BOYS
by Robert Diamond - Dec 2, 2010

Today, we are concluding our spotlight on the new school of Disney feature film directors begun last week with Byron Howard and Nathan Greno of TANGLED - now in Disney Digital 3D in movie theaters nationwide - and continuing yesterday with Don Hahn of WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY, with a indepth conversation with Jeff Sherman and Greg Sherman, the directors of THE BOYS documentary - now available on DVD - tracing the glorious career of their famous songwriting fathers, even if life was anything but 'A Spoonful of Sugar' behind the scenes. MARY POPPINS to THE TIGGER MOVIE, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG on screen and on Broadway to BUSKER'S ALLEY, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and much more, the Sherman Brothers' career continues on in their twilight years as their sons carry on the tradition of incisive, emotional storytelling in THE BOYS documentary just as their fathers have done in their hundreds of beloved songs - some, such as those from MARY POPPINS, Academy Award winners. The rich legacy lives on with the Sherman Sons in THE BOYS, new on DVD this week.

by Ben Peltz - Oct 27, 2010

Abigail Grotke... a real-life person named Abigail Grotke... has been collecting vintage books on relationship advice for 25 years, amassing over a thousand volumes published from 1822 to 1978, with titles such as The Unfair Sex, She Cooks to Conquer, How to Get a Teen-Age Boy and What To Do With Him When You Get Him and A Virtuous Woman: Sex Life in Relation to the Christian Life.   In her archival website, Miss Abigail's Time Warp Advice, questions like, 'Is a man abnormal if he likes art and dislikes sports,' are answered by quoting the wisdom of experts like Fred Brown and Rudolf T. Kempton, authors of 1950's Sex Questions and Answers: A Guide to Happy Marriage ('Every normal man has a bit of woman in him and every woman contains some of the male in her personality.').

BWW Reviews: Beautiful SOUTH PACIFIC Revival Sails Into OCPAC
by Michael L. Quintos - Oct 14, 2010

Though times certainly have changed from when the Greatest Generation showed true heroism in the battlefields of European and Tropical soil, it's staggering to realize that in 2010, racial issues still feel like a haphazardly patched wound reopened. Prejudice, no matter what the decade, still stings. These themes were boldly explored back in 1949, the year the original production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC first wowed audiences. In this new, exquisite, magnificent revival, director Bartlett Sher lets loose an oustanding, revitalized production that is now playing for a two-week engagement at the Orange County Performing Arts Center through October 24. It's a classic beautifully reborn.

BWW Interviews: Boston Pop's Keith Lockhart
by Joseph F. Panarello - May 3, 2010

In the past 125 years, plenty of things have come and gone in our society. Horse and buggy rides used to be a common mode of transportation but are now relegated to being novelties that tourists indulge in. Women no longer lace themselves into corsets, and men no longer Brilliantine their hair. Black vinyl records now exist solely on the shelves of collectors, and if one were to order a strawberry phosphate at the local luncheonette, he or she would be greeted by a look of utter confusion on the other side of the counter. However, the Boston Pops Orchestra, founded in 1885 is still performing on tour and in Boston's beautiful Symphony Hall. According to some mavens, it's an orchestra that has truly improved with age.

BWW Reviews: New Line's WILD PARTY is Wildly Entertaining
by Chris Gibson - Apr 27, 2010

Andrew Lippa's musical adaptation of Joseph Moncure March's epic poem, THE WILD PARTY, is a brilliant work, especially if you're anything like me, and you like your entertainment on the dark side. It's a decadent jewel gleaming with sinister possibilities, and thus, far removed from the current trend toward sunny shows with predictably happy endings. Though set in 1928, it manages to perfectly capture the current mood of cynicism that seems to have run rampant through our country over the course of the last fifteen years. New Line Theatre's current presentation of THE WILD PARTY is a deliriously engaging experience, easily making it one of the best productions of the year.
