NY Philharmonic Opening Night Gala to be Broadcast on PBS

Tune in to PBS on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. for Live From Lincoln Center's telecast of the New York Philharmonic's Opening Night Gala. Conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert, the program will open with Samuel Barber's The School for Scandal Overture of 1931, and will also feature selections from Richard Strauss's Salome and Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser, as well as Barber's Andromache's Farewell.

Producing theater for younger audiences since 1931, Nashville Children's Theatre is the oldest children's theater in the United States, so you'd think the company had already done everything - at least once. But this summer, thanks to a new initiative of NCT's education department, students in grades 6 through 12 will perform a fully-staged production of Once Upon A Mattress July 29 and 30 as the culmination of the Emerging Actors summer drama camp.

Actor Jackie Cooper Passes Away at 88

Actor Jackie Cooper has passed away. He was 88 years old. The youngest actor to ever be nominated for an Academy Award at just nine years old in 1931, Jackie Cooper went on to have an acting career that spanned nearly six decades. He later delved into directing and producing for television.

Reprise Theatre Company's 2011-2012 season features two classic American musicals at UCLA's Freud Playhouse - "Cabaret" (September 13 to September 25, 2011), based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood, music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, Broadway production directed by Harold Prince; "The Baker's Wife" (February 14 to 26, 2012), with book by Joseph Stein and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, based on the film 'La Femme de Boulanger' by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono; and a third production to be announced, which will play April 17 to 29, 2012.

John Baldessari: Pure Beauty, the first major U.S. exhibition in 20 years to survey Baldessari's career, will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from October 20, 2010, through January 9, 2011. This retrospective will feature approximately 120 works spanning the period from 1962 to 2010.

Hedgerow Theatre launches its 88th season Sept. 22-Oct. 10 with an adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's stunning novel An American Tragedy portraying true events about one of the most infamous murders of the century. Dreiser's masterpiece is being presented in cooperation with The University of Pennsylvania and The Wharton Esherick Museum, as part of a major symposium, THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN, held this fall at the University of Pennsylvania.
