Two women with ten instruments equals one good time when Simple Gifts takes the stage at the Second Presbyterian Church on January 22. This award-winning band performs on an impressive array of instruments, including two violins, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, recorders, and guitar plus some more unusual instruments like the bowed psaltery, baritone fiddle, banjolin, guitjo, and doumbek.

Mary Travers, best known as one third of the legendary musical trio Peter, Paul & Mary, died in September at the age of 72 from complications from chemotherapy that she had been receiving to treat leukemia. According to a report in the New York Times, theater vets Whoopi Goldberg, Anne Meara, and Eli Wallach will take part in a public memorial for the singer on Monday, November 9 at Riverside Church at 7pm. Primarily for invited guests only, tickets will be available to the general public on November 9 on a first-come, first-served basis.

The 2008 Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) Awards show was a night full of musical highlights and heavyweights as SHOF Chairman/CEO Hal David and President Linda Moran helped induct songwriting heavyweights including Desmond Child, Albert Hammond, Loretta Lynn, Alan Menken and John Sebastian into its hallowed Hall, and saluted honorees Paul Anka, Anne Murray, John Rzeznik and Milt Okun for their contributions to popular music.
