by Sondra Forsyth - May 21, 2015

ABT's 75th Anniversary Gala, a balletomane's dream of a performance on May 18th 2015 at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center, treated the nearly sold-out audience to a joyous celebration in dance and archival images of the American Ballet Theatre's seven-and-a-half decade reign as 'America's National Ballet Company'. That designation became official with an act of Congress on April 27th 2006, but the troupe founded by Richard Pleasant with Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith as Co-Directors in 1940 had embraced the ethos of this country right from the start. BWW Reviews: THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED at Desert Rose PlayhouseBWW Reviews: THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED at Desert Rose Playhouse
by Audrey Liebross - Apr 23, 2015

The Desert Rose Playhouse, in Rancho Mirage, California, is presenting yet another fine production - its last show for the 2014-15 season. Douglas Carter Beane's THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED is an edgy comedy which raises serious questions and which contains serious moments, especially in the second act. It is well-acted and superbly staged. I recommend this show for adults with one caveat: It contains brief moments of full frontal male nudity, and is therefore not suitable for everyone. (more...)

BWW Reviews: JESSICA LANG DANCE Mixes Movement with Graphic ElementsBWW Reviews: JESSICA LANG DANCE Mixes Movement with Graphic Elements
by Frances Steiner - Mar 30, 2015

Although Jessica Lang Dance was founded in 2011, Artistic Director Jessica Lang is no newcomer to the dance scene. Lang, a disciple of Twyla Tharp, is on the faculty of American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School and has been an active choreographer since 1999. Lang's signature style marries classical movements with a "striking design element." This theme played out through Jessica Lang Dance's performance at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium, an evening co-presented with Washington Performing Arts and City Dance. The graphic component in particular was inconsistent throughout the evening and did not always further Lang's artistic vision. (more...)

BWW Reviews: BALLET WEST Debuts at the Joyce Theater in NYCBWW Reviews: BALLET WEST Debuts at the Joyce Theater in NYC
by Sondra Forsyth - Mar 27, 2015

On May 25th 2015, opening night of Ballet West's debut season at the Joyce, three New York premieres and a world premiere showcased the company's admirable command of contemporary ballet. The world-renowned troupe from Salt Lake City does have the classics in its repertoire, but the decision by Artistic Director Adam Sklute to bring his superb dancers to NYC in pieces by four celebrated if sometimes controversial current choreographers was a wise one. TRANSFORMATIVE TURN: Miami City Ballet Enters Its Shining Moment Under the Direction of Lourdes LopezTRANSFORMATIVE TURN: Miami City Ballet Enters Its Shining Moment Under the Direction of Lourdes Lopez
by Isabel D. Almaraz - Mar 19, 2015

Miami City Ballet has been in a period of transition, a transformation if you will, that has been unsurprisingly effective in reinventing the company and catapulting it to the world-class ballet company that it has always been on the verge of becoming. Lourdes Lopez' arrival in 2012 has infused the company with balance: balance of repertoire, style, choreography, and a complete re-imagining of how to stay true to the fundamental nature of the company without becoming conventional.
