Calgary-based Honens today announced details of its 2018 Piano Competition.  Pianists of all nationalities, aged 20 to 30 on August 30, 2018, with the exception of past Honens Laureates and professionally managed artists, may apply starting February 1, 2017.  The application deadline is October 31, 2017.  The Competition's Quarterfinals take place in Berlin and New York in March 2018.  Semifinals and Finals take place in Calgary from August 30 to September 8, 2018.

I first became aware of author Roald Dahl from watching the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, although I didn't read the book it was based on, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, until later, finding it much darker in tone than the movie, but very entertaining nonetheless. After that exposure I remember watching the Tales of the Unexpected series on television, which was based on his short story collection of the same name. I never read Matilda, but I wish I had, and I think I'm going to in the near future, because we share something in common; the love of books of all kinds. MATILDA THE MUSICAL brings this tale to life in impressive fashion (book by Dennis Kelly, music & lyrics by Tim Minchin), with this story of a precocious little girl, whose parents don't understand her. It's a wondrous show, filled with memorable songs that snugly fit and advance the action, and an incredible cast that will have you rooting for them every step of the way. It's truly magical, and definitely a must-see, for families, and even those who don't have them. You have to see this glorious production that's currently playing at the Fox Theatre through November 1, 2015.

Playwright Martin Sherman, most famous for his Pulitzer and Tony-nominated play Bent is in town for the Mark Taper Forum's revival of  the classic directed by Moises Kaufman. We sat down at Vespaio at the after party Sunday July 26 and chatted briefly about the play and this production. What research you did originally on the persecution of gays in Nazi Germany?

Easton's State Theatre has announced its 2012-13 season- on sale to State Theatre Members Wed, August 1 (Box Office window at 453 Northampton Street opens at 6 AM; Online Ticketing and Phone lines open at Noon). Tickets will go on sale to the Public August 15th at 10 AM. Limit 6 tickets per Member per performance during Members Only sales. The Old Globe ends its extended World Premiere run of the musical A Room with a View tonight, April 15.

'People who smile at nothing are capable of anything', claims rigidly proper Charlotte Bartlett (Karen Ziemba), cousin and ward/chaperone to Lucy Honeychurch (Ephie Aardema) in the world premiere musical whose book is taken from the novel by E. M. Forster and the 1985 Merchant/Ivory film A Room with a View. In 1908, Brits followed propriety to the letter; rules and regulations governed very closely the way they spoke and acted. So, when they traveled to Florence, Italy or anywhere outside of Britania, for that matter, as is the case in Act I, they carry their Baedeker or guide book and refer to it, as a religious fanatic would a bible. Now onstage at the Old Globe, San Diego, A Room with a View is a beautifully written and executed musical by Marc Acito and Jeffrey Stock with impeccably detailed staging by Scott Schwartz. It also boasts a phenomenal cast and magnificent art direction, with exquisite sets by Hedi Ettinger and period perfect costumes by Judith Dolan.

The Old Globe today announced that the World Premiere musical A Room with a View will receive an additional week of performances and will now run through April 15.

Andy Cooney comes to the State Theatre on Saturday, March 17 at 8 PM.
