Custom Made Theatre caps its 15th season with Arthur Miller's The Crucible, directed by Stuart Bousel. The Crucible is arguably The Great American Play, a classic story of individuals confronting the corruption within their society and standing up for their convictions under even the direst of circumstances. Custom Made has assembled a cast of 17 to portray the frightening times of 17th Century Salem, Massachusetts. Smuin Ballet closes its 20th Anniversary Season with two World Premieres and a Michael Smuin classic, touring the Bay Area May 2 - June 7, 2014 in the XXcentric Spring Dance Series. The program will feature one act of Michael Smuin's ebullient Dancin' With Gershwin ballet, back on the Smuin stage for the first time since 2008. XXcentric will also include World Premieres from Smuin's Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert and Val Caniparoli, internationally renowned choreographer and principal character dancer at San Francisco Ballet. The XXcentric Spring Dance Series will kick off its tour at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (May 2-11), continuing at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek (May 16-17); the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts (May 21-25); and at the Sunset Center in Carmel (June 6-7). Certainly those of us who frequent any Jewish deli in Los Angeles will recognize these characters. Playwright Sam Bobrick admits some of the events in the play's 12 sketches actually happened to him, some to his friends, and some to people he just happened to be sitting next to at lunch. After working in the entertainment business for over 50 years, he's not sure which is which.
