WHO'S HOLIDAY! Playwright Sues Dr. Seuss Enterprises for Cancelation of Play

Earlier this year, an off-Broadway production of WHO'S HOLIDAY!, a new play by Matthew Lombardo, was canceled by the Shubert Organization they received complaints from Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Now according to the New York Times, the playwright is suing the owner of copyrights for Seuss' works, arguing that the 'highly transformative' material does not in fact infringe on How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The Gold Dust Orphans' 2016 Christmas show features "The World's Foremost Drag Detective" Shirley Holmes and her sidekick Dr. Jody Watley attempting to solve a series of mysterious deaths in Ryan Landry's MURDER ON THE POLAR EXPRESS. Directed by Larry Coen, it has an impressive roster of veterans and newcomers playing all of your favorite fictional Christmas characters, and a cameo appearance by Rhoda, the dog. Scott Martino's costumes are to-die-for, and Meredith Langton and the GlitterPuss Dancers kick up a (snow)storm.

Just a few days ago I reviewed a show that, if you remember, I felt had one major downfall; that the newer songs bringing it from the film version to the stage version had lyrics written by Glenn Slater. Now, just a few blocks from that other production, Showtunes puts up a concert of another film to stage adaptation with all of the lyrics written by Glenn Slater and music from Alan Menken. And while there were certainly some wonderful voices in the concert it just proves one thing that Showtunes needs to pay attention to, not all shows need a revival.
