The West-End production of SWEENEY TODD, starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, will officially open tonight, March 20, at the Adelphi Theatre. As Broadway World previously reported, Jonathan Kent's version of the musical opened in the West End for previews on March 10 following its sell-out success at the Chichester Festival Theatre. The show will feature British comedian Jason Manford as Signor Pirelli for one month while Robert Burt is on leave.

Rebecca Faulkenberry, the star of Broadway's Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark, will be the Special Musical Guest of Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony-winning orchestrator Jonathan Tunick in his Birdland concert this coming Monday, March 19 at 7pm.

First Night to Release New SWEENEY TODD Album in April

Following sell-out success at Chichester Festival Theatre, Jonathan Kent's acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd just transferred to London's West End for a limited season on 10 March 2012. Widely acknowledged as Stephen Sondheim's musical masterpiece, Sweeney Todd stars distinguished musical performer Michael Ball as the eponymous demon barber of Fleet Street and Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton as the devoted Mrs Lovett. First Night Records will release the new 2012 album in April. It is currently available for pre-order here.

Comedian Jason Manford to Join UK SWEENEY TODD As Pirelli for One Month

British comedian Jason Manford is to play Signor Pirelli in Jonathan Kent's West-End production of SWEENY TODD. Actor Michael Ball, who stars as Todd in the show, revealed on the Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday evening that Jason Manford will be taking the role while Robert Burt, who is currently playing the part, is on leave.

Coming to the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre direct from Broadway for six weeks only, the Kennedy Center's critically acclaimed Broadway production of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim's "Follies," has now completed casting. "Follies" stars four-time Tony Award nominee Jan Maxwell as Phyllis Rogers Stone, Tony Award winner Victoria Clark, two-time Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein as Buddy Plummer, three-time Emmy Award nominee Ron Raines as Benjamin Stone and Olivier Award winner Elaine Paige as Carlotta Campion. Maxwell, Burstein, Raines and Paige are all returning to the roles they originated on Broadway.

James William Productions and Stephenie Skyllas will present Kurt Peterson and Victoria Mallory in When Everything Was Possible, A Concert (with comments), for one night only, Sunday April 29th (7:30pm) at New York City Center (131 West 55th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues), as a benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. They will be joined by a thirteen-piece band (Michael Rafter, Music Director), playing new orchestrations by Tony Award winner Jonathan Tunick. Larry Moss directs, with musical staging by Joshua Bergasse ("Smash"). Carolyn Wong will provide lighting design, with sound design by Leon Rothenberg and projection design by Telegraphicmedia.

Review - Merrily We Roll Along: Back To Before

The original Broadway cast album of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along is one of those handful of recordings - like Mack and Mabel and Candide - that a musical theatre lover can listen to hundreds of times without hearing a clue as to why the show flopped.  The quick answer, and usually the most unfair one, is 'the book.'  More often, though, the more complete answer is ambition.

The Broadway at Birdland concert series has just announced that Emmy/Grammy/Oscar/Tony-winning orchestrator JONATHAN TUNICK is returning to Birdland with his Broadway Moonlighters on Monday, March 19 at 7pm. This is a rare public performance by Broadway's premier orchestrator, who will be leading a big band of Broadway's finest musicians in his own arrangements. Tunick's last appearance with the Broadway Moonlighters (with surprise guest vocalist Barbara Cook) was Standing Room Only, and of course, another Surprise Guest performer will appear this year!

Merrily We Roll Along, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth, is directed by James Lapine with music direction by Rob Berman and musical staging by Dan Knechtges. Merrily just opened, and will play a two-week run through February 19, 2012.
