Symphony Space opens its 2013-14 Music season with 'Kurt Weill on Broadway,' tonight, October 7 (8 pm) at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre. Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Broadway opening of Weill's One Touch of Venus. Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor John Lithgow offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity when he performs the Chicago area debut of his critically-acclaimed one-man show, "Stories by Heart" at the ECC Arts Center, located in Building H on the Elgin Community College Campus, 1700 Spartan Drive Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.; and at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, 9501 Skokie Blvd., Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.

The Huntington Theatre Company presents a concert version of Jason Robert Brown's powerful contemporary musical The Last Five Years for three performances only November 23 and 24. Adam Kantor (Rent, Avenue Q) and Betsy Wolfe (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Everyday Rapture) play the two twenty-something New Yorkers who dive head-first into marriage, fueled by the optimism of finding 'the one.' Winner of Drama Desk Drama Awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics, The Last Five Years takes a bold look at one young couple's hope that love endures the test of time.

According to Birdland's website, Broadway veteran Cheyenne Jackson will be making his debut at the venue with his brand new show, featuring songs from his new album, 'I'm Blue Skies', as well as classics from his acclaimed one-man show 'Music of the Mad Men Era,' which sold out at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Jackson will be working with long-time musical director Ben Toth at Birdland on December 1 & 2, 2013 at 6 PM and 9:15 PM, respectively.

New York City Ballet will open its 2013-2014 season tonight, September 17 with six performances of Peter Martins' full-length production of Swan Lake. Set to Tschaikovsky's score and featuring sets and costumes by the acclaimed Danish painter Per Kirkeby, the production was last performed by NYCB in the fall of 2011 to sold-out houses.

'Sweet Smell of Success', presented by NYU Steinhardt's Program in Vocal Performance, will run tonight, Sept. 12-14, and features music by Tony, Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prize winner Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by three-time Tony Award nominee Craig Carnelia, and book by Tony Award winner John Guare. Steinhardt's own John Simpkins directs.

3-D Theatriclas presents Funny Girl Sept 6 - Sept 22, 2013 at the Plummer Auditorium, and Sept 27 - Sept 29, 2013 at Redondo Beach. Funny Girl is a musical with a book by Isobel Lennart, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill. The semi-biographical plot is based on the life and career of Broadway, film star and comedienne Fanny Briceand her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein. Its original title was My Man.
