Following the sold-out concert performance of Soho Cinders at the Queen's Theatre in October 2011, Stiles & Drewe's new musical will receive its world premiere at Soho Theatre running from 2nd August to 9th September 2012. The touring production of MARY POPPINS that's currently gracing the stage of the Peabody Opera House is "practically perfect", featuring eye-popping special effects, a glorious set, and terrific performances that manage to capture the spirit of the 1964 Disney film, as well as the P.L. Travers books that inspired it. While some of the more beloved elements from the movie are noticeably absent, they've been replaced with sequences that are every bit as magical and engaging. Though the staging is a bit cramped, this is a spectacular show that appeals to both children and adults. And, I should know because I brought along my six-year old son, and he loved it. (more...)

In a musical revue game show opening the 10th Annual Rivers and Spires Festival in Clarksville last Thursday, the Roxy Regional Theatre, Clarksville's oldest live theatre and only professional theatre, unveiled its 30th Anniversary Season. Under the direction of Tom Thayer, executive director, and John McDonald, artistic director, the theatre will kick off the 2012-2013 season with the Dolly Parton musical 9 to 5: The Musical. The twelve finalists for this year's Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year Competition will be judged by Danielle Hope (Dorothy in Wizard of Oz and soon to be in the film of Les Miserables), Michael McCabe (Producer, Wicked), David Shrubsole (Conductor, London Road) and Laurie Sansom (Artistic Director, Derngate Theatre, Northampton). The chairman of the judges will be Edward Seckerson, Chief Classical Music and Opera Critic for The Independent and the prize will be awarded by Julia McKenzie and a representative of Overtures: The Bunnett-Muir Musical Theatre Archive Trust, sponsors of the SSSSSPOTY first prize.
