The play Our Country's Good had its opening night last night at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. The play, which has been brought across the pond by presenter David Mirvish is about a colony of convicts who are cast in a play by an officer of the navy at the urging of his captain. Of course, not all members of the colony take kindly to the sentiment of using convicts as actors over laborers. Ultimately, the underdogs do triumph and the play is a hit. (more...)

THE BEAUX' STRATAGEM, directed by Stratford Festival Artistic Director Antoni Cimolino opened to raucous laughter and thunderous applause Friday night at the Stratford Festival. With a cast like this, I would not expect anything less. This fun and thoughtful restoration comedy by George Farquhar, presents audiences with many players, harboring many talents... leading to many laughs. The Stratford Festival of Canada, whose present artistic director is Atoni Cimolino, started on July 13, 1953, when Sir Alec Guiness walked onto a stage located in a large tent and spoke the first lines of what has become the internationally-recognized celebration of theatre. Now housed in five theatres, offering plays and other entertainment from late April to November, Stratford is the largest repertoire theatre in North America. The offerings are not only the writings of Shakespeare, but a variety of classical and contemporary works, including musicals. (more...)

Our Country's Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker will play in the Clarence Brown Theatre's Carousel Theatre October 3-20, 2014. Based on real events, this award-winning drama is an evocative look at a moment in history - the founding of a nation -and an inspiring tale about the transforming power of theatre. The production is sponsored by the Clayton Foundation. It contains brief nudity and strong language. A staged reading of The Recruiting Officer immediately following the Friday, October 11 performance and a talk back with the director, dramaturg and cast immediately following the Sunday, October 13 matinee also are associated with this production. What are two young gentlemen in the early 18th century to do when they are left penniless as the result of having squandered their family fortunes? They seek rich wives, of course - the sooner, the better. Actors' Theatre of Columbus is producing THE BEAUX' STRATAGEM as its final play of the Schiller Park Season. The comedy will be performed every Today through Sunday evening at 8:00 p.m. from today, August 1 to September 1. It is directed by Adam Simon. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to make the experience more comfortable. (more...)

Everyman Theatre closes its historic 2012/13 season with a staging of the rarely produced comedic gem, The Beaux' Stratagem. Founding Artistic Director Vincent M. Lancisi directs the production, which features a large cast of 15 actors and includes Resident Company Members Megan Anderson, Clinton Brandhagen and Bruce Randolph Nelson.
