Berkeley Playhouse continues their tenth anniversary season with everyone's favorite redheaded optimist, Annie. One of the most popular musicals in Berkeley Playhouse's history, this all new production for the holidays is going to 'shine like the top of the Chrysler Building!' In 1930s depression era New York, young orphaned Annie is determined to find the parents that left her on the doorstep of the New York City Orphanage, run by the soused and sour Miss Hannigan. When Annie is chosen by billionaire Oliver Warbucks to spend the holidays at his mansion, she leaves behind the only community she's ever known, and her daily life of 'hard knocks' and 'maybe's' turns into one of cinemas and Roll's Royce's . . . and an opportunity to discover the truth about her parents. Based on the popular Harold Gray comics of the 1920s, Annie is filled with adventure, mayhem, and the discovery of what family truly means. Performances run Friday through Sunday November 10 through December 23, with an added Wednesday performance December 20, and Thursday evenings November 30, December 7 and 21. Berkeley Playhouse opens their tenth season of professional theater for family audiences with the East Bay premiere of Alan Menken's heavenly musical comedy, Sister Act. Based on the hit 1992 film, audiences will be praising the toe-tapping, gospel infused score from Tony and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid). When downtown disco diva Dolores Van Cartier witnesses a crime, she's placed into protective custody in the one place she's sure not to be found - a convent! Forced to trade in her nighttime habit of nightclubbing and disco dancing for a nun's habit, Dolores finds newfound self-worth, confidence, and a community she never expected to be a part of, as she leads her fellow Sisters to heavenly new heights, and transforms their church into a revitalized home of celebration, song, and community spirit. Filled with powerful music, outrageous choreography, and a moving story of unlikely friendships, Sister Act will raise the roof of the historic Julia Morgan theater, which itself was originally built in 1910 as a community church. Berkeley Playhouse Managing Director Gretchen Feyer announced today 'SHINE!', a special benefit performance of Billy Elliot the Musical on March 24, 2017. The pre-performance event begins at 6:00 p.m. with a festive reception in the historic Julia Morgan Theater that will include cocktails, light bites, and a decadent dessert bar hosted by some of the East Bay's top restaurants, caterers, and beverage specialists including Ann's Catering, Drake's Brewing Company, Le Mediterranee, Mariposa Bakery, Nabolom Bakery, Sutro Wine, Sweet Adeline Bakeshop, and Two Local Girls. The event will also include a special announcement regarding the East Bay theater company's upcoming 10th anniversary season, launching September 2017.  Berkeley Playhouse at the historic Julia Morgan Theater continues their most acclaimed season yet, with The Addams Family.
